It is not excluded that it will be given already familiar from the concept name Electra: the company has applied for registration of the corresponding trademark in Canada.
The American brand Buick belongs to General Motors.
In the home market, the brand is not doing well: in the last few years, car sales either fall, or show symbolic growth. The most noticeable was the decline in 2020:
Americans bought 162,741 units, down 21.3 percent from a year earlier.
According to Carsalesbase, this year’s figure is up, with dealers selling 151,010 units in the first three quarters (more recent data not yet available), a 27.4% increase over January-September 2020.
The current lineup of the brand in the States consists of crossovers: the Encore, Envision and Enclave are listed on the official website of the brand.
So far, Buick does not have in the U.S. any fully electric car.
However, we do not exclude that the situation will be improved by the next novelty: it is expected that the lineup of the brand will be supplemented with «green» parkettes, which probably will be given a name Electra.
It became known that the American automaker filed a trademark registration application for Electra in Canada.
Information about the document dated December 20 this year appeared on the forum of Rivian owners.
We should note that the presence of a trademark does not oblige Buick to use the registered name for a production car, though the assumption sounds very plausible.
Many people will find the name Electra familiar: a model with this name was in the Buick lineup in the past century: it was the name of the car, produced from 1959 to 1990 in body styles of sedan, coupe, convertible and station wagon.
This model, of course, was not an electric car: it was named after sculptor Elektra Waggoner-Biggs. In 1991, this car was replaced by the Buick Park Avenue.
Besides, the conceptual parkette Buick Electra, which was presented by the company in the autumn of 2020, had the same name.
The show car featured a high «waistline,» large wheel arches and «rollers,» as well as a dark body kit around the perimeter.
Headlights and taillights have narrow L-shaped form, and in place of the traditional radiator grille there is a blank.
The concept has four side doors: their design is «butterfly wings», that is, the rear doors open counterclockwise, and also all four go up and to the side (diagonally).
Recall, the basis of the concept Buick Electra is the platform Ultium development of GM (it is based on the already presented serial «electric-parkette» Cadillac Lyric).
The show car has a two-motor installation (one electric motor on each axis), the total output of which is 589 hp.
The claimed maximum range on a single charge for this crossover was 660 km.
If Buick really decides to create a serial automobile based on the Electra concept, it is likely to compete with the Chrysler Airflow (not yet presented) and Ford Mustang Mach-E (sales in the U.S. started earlier this year).
If the model turns out to be in the more expensive segment, it will most likely have to compete for buyers with the BMW iX, Audi e-tron and Mercedes-Benz EQE
