Dutch startup Lightyear will launch an electric One liftback capable of charging a battery from sunlight a year later than promised.

The first production units will be shipped to customers in mid-2022.

The Lightyear One prototype debuted in the summer of 2019, at which time its creators promised to begin production in 2021, but business processes were hit hard by the coronavirus, so the schedule shifted.

Lightyear has no problems with money: this year alone, the startup attracted 93 million euros in investments, including from the international insurance and funeral company DELA, as well as the Dutch entrepreneur and art collector Joop van Kaldenborg.

The Lightyear One is a large liftback (length 5057 mm, width 1898 mm, height 1426 mm) with all horizontal panels covered with solar panels.

Lightyear decided to produce these panels itself, for which it bought a plant with all the necessary equipment from automotive sliding sunroof and panoramic roof manufacturer Inalfa Roof Systems in Venray, Netherlands.

The total area of the panels is 5 m2, with good sunshine they can give up to 70 km «free» mileage per day, which more than covers the needs of the average European.

That is, in theory, it is possible for weeks and months without plugging the electric car into the socket. The maximum power of the outlet charging system is 60 kW.

The electricity generated by the solar panels is stored in a battery with a capacity of 60 kWh, which is integrated in the bottom of the car.

The estimated range on a single charge is 725 km on the WLTP cycle.

In practice, last summer the Lightyear One prototype managed to drive 710 km on a single charge at an average speed of 85 km/h on the ring test site in Aldenhoven, Germany.

It is clear that on public roads with frequent acceleration and braking the mileage will be less.

The Lightyear One is powered by four motor-wheels, the power of which the developers still do not name. Up to 100 km / h liftback can accelerate in 10 seconds — not so fast against the background of «electric» Tesla.

The top-of-the-line Tesla Model S Plaid with 1020 hp gets the first «hundred» in 2.1 seconds, has a certified mileage of 637 kilometers on a single charge and costs 129,990 euros in the Netherlands.

Lightyear wants as much as 150,000 euros for its One liftback, while two years ago the price was reported to be 119,000 euros.

The body of the Lightyear One is made of aluminum and carbon fiber, is designed for five people (including the driver) and boasts excellent aerodynamics: the stated scheme = 0.20.

There are no exterior door handles, and cameras are used instead of mirrors. Volume of the trunk — 780 liters, with the folded back seat — 1701 liters.

Interior design is quite traditional, without giant monitors and with «normal» steering wheel, textile and natural wood dominate in furnish.

In the summer it became known that Lightyear will produce liftback One not by own forces, but at the plant Valmet in Finland, which now assembles Mercedes A-Class and crossovers GLC on contract basis.

Recall that in the 90s this plant made the Euro-Samara brand Lada.

By 2024, Lightyear plans to develop a more compact and affordable electric car.

In Germany, rival startup Sono Motors is developing the inexpensive Sion solar car, which will cost 25,500 euros, but its production at the former Saab plant in Trollhättan, Sweden, will not begin until 2023.
