The next generation of the Mazda 6 is about to revolutionize its rear-wheel drive and coupé body.

Car & Driver has found out that the next-generation Mazda 6 sedan will be unveiled to the public in late 2022, with a number of significant changes to the new body model.

It is expected that in terms of exterior design, the car will largely repeat the Vision Coupe concept shown at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show.

The latter is a two-door, but journalists believe that the product «six» will still remain a four-door sedan, which will receive the most streamlined body with a long hood and a short tail.

Nothing has been reported about the changes in the cabin, while the mentioned concept appeared before the public in a four-seater version, however, the serial Mazda 6 will probably retain the original five-seater layout.

«Six» of the next generation will be built on the basis of a new rear-wheel drive platform with a longitudinal engine.

There is still no information on the line of power units, however, according to journalists, the sedan can get a V6 Skyactive-X engine with an electric makeweight, powered by a 48-volt network.

The output of the hybrid plant will be in the region of 350 hp, which will allow the model to compete with the midsize sedans BMW, Genesis and Lexus.

However, he treats this information with a grain of salt, and even the representatives of «Car & Driver» say that they do not exclude the possibility that the next Mazda 6 will completely change the form factor and turn out to be a two-door coupe.

Mazda 6 2022, when will the new model be released in Russia?

The 2022 Mazda 6 will be a rear-wheel-drive car — the first time in 18 years of model history, which the manufacturer promises to make more than just mass production.

It has already been announced that the new version will receive at least three versions of the bodywork: sedan, coupe and station wagon; and each of them will be given an additional «charged» modification.

In addition to a more powerful engine, such versions will be equipped with the i-Activ all-wheel drive system, and the engine range will be based on gasoline and diesel «sixes» with hybrid superstructures.

The main feature of the power units is the longitudinal arrangement, so the Japanese, in cooperation with Toyota, are actively preparing a new modular platform, which is expected to subsequently be used in the construction of the new CX-5 and CX-9 crossovers, as well as the Lexus IS and GS.

First details of a completely new body

Already in the fourth year of its release in 2006, the Mazda 6 built on the basis of the 626th model began to sell in millions of copies, which later became the reason for giving this «big family car» the status of the main representative of the Mazda Motor Corporation model line.

This easily explains the excitement with which fans of the brand are waiting for the fourth generation version, which should hit the market in 2022. Even more interest in the new product is fueled by the data that the car will change dramatically.

A new platform, new six-cylinder engines and an exterior that should mimic the elegant concept — add a rear-wheel-drive / all-wheel-drive model to this, which will make the new 2022 Mazda 6 a special car and will surely give it a permanent entry into the elite premium segment.

Exterior

The appearance of the new Mazda 6 2022 has long been not a big secret: back in 2017, the company showed the Mazda Vision Coupe concept car, immediately announcing that this is exactly what the «six» of the future will look like.

Experts unanimously recognized the design of the four-door coupe sedan as very successful, although they noted its certain futurism, which was the result of an attempt by Japanese engineers to minimize the number of any facets of stampings on the body.

Noteworthy is the huge hood, under which the longitudinally located V6 will fit exactly.

Another interesting solution was the rear doors, which are noticeably narrower than the front ones, and in the absence of the usual handles they become completely invisible, visually turning the car into a large two-door coupe.

Salon

Based on photos from the interior of the 2022 Mazda 6 concept car, minimalism will also reign inside the novelty.

The decoration should contain expensive materials, including natural wood, and the information and technical part will be responsible for the displays, amicably hidden under a large double visor on the front panel.

Against this background, the multifunction steering wheel looks just as laconic, which clearly does not indulge in an abundance of buttons, like the central tunnel, where you can see only a small joystick for controlling the transmission and a rotating washer with yet unknown functionality.

Technical stuffing

Surely, the new Mazda 6 2022 will receive a wide range of power plants, but the new V6 will definitely be at the top of the range: the petrol Skyactiv-X and diesel Skyactiv-D.

They promise to make each of them a hybrid superstructure in the form of a starter-generator, and this is definitely not the end of it, since full-fledged hybrid motors with purely «green» operating modes are being prepared for the future for cars.

By the way, this will be the first such experience for the model, since the previous SKYACTIV-G did not receive any electric «assistants».

Modifications and options of the current generation

Despite the relatively early debut of the novelty, sales of the “third” Mazda 6 2022 are clearly not going to fall, for which we should thank the well-chosen concept of the model.

A formal D-class car in terms of its equipment has come close to the premium segment, as anyone who tries to ask the price of the current version of the Japanese sedan can be convinced.

Today in Russia the Mazda 6 model of the current generation is offered in six modifications:

• Drive;
• Active;
• Supreme;
• Supreme Plus;
• Executive;
• Executive Plus.

The maximum equipment includes ventilation and electric drives of the front seats, a head-up display, leather trim, parking sensors «in a circle», all-round cameras, keyless entry, a blind spot monitoring system and a host of other options.
