Germans have shown a pre-production electric Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV.

Germans have prepared a luxury electric SUV Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV Concept for the IAA 2021 home motor show in Munich.

As the name suggests, this is an all-road version of the production sedan EQS, moreover, from Maybach division.

Outside, the prototype immediately draws attention with a huge «grille» with vertical stripes, narrow headlamp, abundance of chrome elements in the exterior decoration, a huge 24-inch wheels, thin stripe rear lights across the width of the body and two-tone paint combination of red «Zircon Red» and black «Obsidian Black Metallic» shades.

Inside the SUV, the MBUX Hyperscreen panel with three large screens is located in front.

Instead of the traditional steering wheel, there is a steering wheel, inserts of pink gold and the floor is covered with faux fur.

Inside there are four individual seats and the driver’s door opens automatically.

The rear seats are separated by a console, which includes a remote control of the multimedia system, cup holders and a vase for flowers.

The most surprising thing is that the company calls this concept as close to the production model as possible — which means that the design of the upcoming flagship electric SUV will be exactly the same.

The manufacturer does not go into technical details of the project yet. It is known that the model shares a platform with the EQS, probably they will have common electric motors and batteries.

Cruise range of the SUV should reach 600 kilometers. The first electric SUV EQS SUV will be presented on the market, and then there will be a Maybach version based on it.

The first one will appear at the end of 2022, and the second one — at least one year later.

Mercedes-Maybach EQS: unusual proportions, painted «grill» and flattened steering wheel.

At the sight of the first electric Mercedes-Maybach not immediately understand that this is a crossover — the proportions it is more like a hatchback or squat Japanese minivan, and this is generally good, because electric cars should not imitate the layout of traditional models with internal combustion engines, like a monumental Mercedes-Maybach GLS.

The absence of any indication of «crossover» in the name, i.e. prefix SUV, X, All-Terrain or something like that can also confuse.

Meanwhile, in terms of details Mercedes-Maybach EQS, on the contrary, too meticulously reproduces the stereotypes of traditional expensive models: half of the front occupied by a giant glossy shield, which imitates the radiator grille, which the electric car does not need.

Among the interesting features — the ornament of Maybach emblems in the headlight surrounds and side windows, mirrors moved forward beyond the front doors, 24-inch wheels with deep drawings and chrome side trim, visually uniting the passenger side of the cabin and trunk (also, incidentally, the solution, typical for minivans).

In the cabin, designers were hostage to a high-tech 56-inch wide Hyperscreen scoreboard across the width of the front panel — the same as in the top versions of the Mercedes-Benz EQS liftback and Mercedes-Benz EQE sedan.

This scoreboard determines the shape of the air ducts and elements adjacent to the panel — the «soaring» center tunnel, too, in fact, all three above-mentioned novelties are the same, but only the Maybach has a «rose gold» decor.

Flattened steering wheel is a feature of the concept, Daimler will hardly risk to emulate Tesla and leave it on a serial automobile, because German concern has not advanced far with unmanned technologies yet.

The four individual seats in the concept seem too sculptural, in a production car they will probably be more traditional in appearance.

About the technical filling of the Mercedes-Maybach EQS the manufacturer said almost nothing: we only know that the crossover is based on the same electric EVA architecture as the EQS liftback and EQE sedan, and the range on a single charge will be 600 km.

In the serial model the concept will become next year, but firstly the market will see the usual crossover EQS, without the prefix Maybach, and only then will appear a luxury version (when exactly is unknown).

The flagship electric SUV will be produced at the American plant of Mercedes-Benz in Tuscaloosa (Alabama), and the slightly more compact and affordable EQE crossover will also make its home here.
