Nissan Skyline 2020 — new body design and ProPilot 2.0 system.
The updated Nissan Skyline 2019-2020 sedan is officially presented in Japan and is ready to enter the local market this fall. The V37 series model, which was a right-hand drive clone of the Infiniti Q50, underwent an unscheduled modernization, which allowed to distance itself from the donor car and finally acquire Nissan brand nameplates (previously, the car, paradoxically, was sold with the Infiniti logos).

During the restyling, the Nissan Skyline 2019-2020 received a changed appearance, a more comfortable and modern interior, new power units. The main innovation, for the sake of which the reform was actually started, was the advanced autopilot ProPilot 2.0 announced back in May, which allows the driver to remove his hands from the steering wheel in certain situations.

The Skyline, improved in many ways, as noted above, will go on sale in the fall and will be offered in four trim levels: GT, GT Type P, GT Type SP and 400R. Prices for the model range from $ 40,000 (the initial version with 304 hp turbo) to $ 58,600 (the most sophisticated version of the hybrid). Well, the Infiniti Q50 sedan this time will undergo an update after the Skyline and will receive a similar list of improvements.

Return to family traits

If the pre-reform Nissan Skyline was perceived as a descendant of the legendary Nissan Skyline GT-R that has completely lost its identity, then the new product looks more like a completely independent and original model, albeit with certain reservations. To create a new look, the developers modified the nose of the car body, placing on it a radiator grill with a branded V-shaped pattern. At the same time, the general configuration of the bumper and head optics remained practically the same.

On the stern there are new lights with revised graphics (circular sections are made in the style of old Skylines of the 90s — early 00s) and a bumper with a revised diffuser. However, with all the innovations of the plastic of the sidewalls with powerful strokes of stampings, the glazing architecture and the silhouette of the sedan remained unchanged, hinting at the still close relationship with Infiniti.

The absence of global transformations in terms of the body layout is also indicated by the external dimensions of the new Nissan Skyline. They almost coincide with the dimensions of the predecessor: the width is the same 1820 mm, the height is 1440-1450 mm, the wheelbase is 2850 mm. Only the length has changed, increasing to 4810 mm (20 mm).

New equipment

The interior of the Nissan Skyline 2020 model year received spot improvements — the quality of finishing materials improved, the dashboard illumination became a little different, a new multifunction steering wheel and a color head-up display appeared, the NissanConnect media center acquired expanded functionality. These improvements are useful and necessary, but they all fade into the background when it comes to the ProPilot 2.0 progressive autopilot included in the arsenal.

The new version of the complex, the module of which is located at the very top of the front panel, like the first generation system (available in the Nissan X-Trail and Nissan Qashqai), takes control completely only when driving on the highway, but now the driver does not need to keep his hands on the steering wheel.

This, however, does not mean that he can stop monitoring the environment and start doing extraneous business. If the driver suddenly stops looking at the road (the direction of gaze is controlled by a special camera), the system will first issue a warning, and then initiate a smooth stop of the car. Also, the autopilot will require human intervention when changing lanes and exiting the motorway. Well, a prerequisite for ProPilot’s work is the route pre-loaded in the navigator.

Specifications Nissan Skyline 2020

The Nissan Skyline engine range has been seriously corrected during the restyling process, however, this applies only to classic power units. Mercedes’ 2.0-liter petrol turbo four (211 hp, 350 Nm) went home, and was replaced by a V6 3.0 biturbo engine with 304 hp. and 400 Nm. Such a motor, which has been installed under the hood of the Infiniti Q50 for several years, is mated with a seven-speed automatic transmission, the thrust from which is directed only to the rear axle.

The next in the line of modifications is the version of the Nissan Skyline 400R, equipped with a V6 3.0 turbo unit with an output power of 405 hp. and a torque of 475 Nm. This most productive Skyline ever produced has an all-wheel drive transmission and is equipped with the same 7-speed «automatic».

The hybrid version of the model has not changed. The tone here is set by a 3.5-liter aspirated V6 (306 hp, 350 Nm), and the company is a 50-kilowatt electric motor (68 hp, 290 Nm). The total power of the unit reaches 364 hp, and the hybrid sedan can be both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

At the end of the review of the equipment, we note that the new Skyline, following the results of the modernization, got hold of the Intelligent Dynamic Suspension adaptive suspension and the more advanced version of the Direct Adaptive Steering steering (does not provide for a rigid connection between the steering wheel and the wheels).
