Polestar 3 crossover, brother of the big Volvo.

Swedish brand Polestar, which broke away from parent company Volvo in 2017, has released the first photo of its third model, the Polestar 3 flagship coupe crossover, which will begin production next year at Volvo’s American plant in South Carolina.

Polestar has grown out of Volvo’s court tuning studio and is positioned as a premium manufacturer of electric cars with an emphasis on sport and maximum environmental friendliness.

Alas, for four years of independent life Polestar has not achieved any significant success in the global market.

Assembly of the two existing models — a hybrid coupe Polestar 1 and a compact electric cross-liftback Polestar 2 — takes place in China, by the end of 2021 Polestar expects to sell only 29 thousand cars in the world.

For comparison, we will say that the Chinese electric car startup Nio, which began its active operations at about the same time as Polestar, in the first three quarters of this year was able to sell more than 70 thousand electric cars in China, and in the summer went to the European market.

Next year, Polestar should make a powerful breakthrough and release on the world market a flagship crossover Polestar 3, which in terms of design will not have anything in common with the models of Volvo.

The first teaser of the Polestar 3 was published in September — it was a photo of the car in profile under a blanket, and now the Swedish brand has shown the crossover as a whole in three-quarters, but in camouflage paint.

The masking pixels, however, do not prevent you from appreciating the design features — the front end is in the style of the 2020 Polestar Precept concept sedan and its production version Polestar 5, which will go into production in 2024.

Between the debuts of Polestar 3 and Polestar 5 will see another model — Polestar 4 crossover (more compact than Polestar 3, but larger than Polestar 2).

Production of the coupe Polestar 1 will be completed this year — thus, in the next four years, the product line will consist of four electric Polestar models, each of which will have several modifications.

In the first half of the next year Polestar wants to hold an IPO on the Nasdaq, that is, become a public company and receive significant financial injections from investors.

By 2025, Polestar wants to reach the sales volume of 290 thousand electric cars per year.

Returning to Polestar 3 recall that at the heart of this model is based on the Volvo platform SPA2, it will get a future Volvo large electric crossover (it will not be called XC90, and will get another name), both machines will stay at the plant Volvo in Ridgeville (a suburb of Charleston, S.C.).

That plant was launched in 2018, now producing only Volvo S60 sedans and with a planned capacity of 150,000 cars per year, it’s actually running at «idle speed» for now.

Two big electric crossovers will give it an effective workload.

The Polestar 4 crossover is likely to make its home here, and production of the Polestar 5 sedan will be set up in China.

Automotive News quoted Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlata as saying that the company is working on its own aluminum electric vehicle platform, which will further distance Polestar from Volvo.

Its first carrier will be the Polestar 5, which means it will not be a technical relative of the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 crossovers.
