The new Rolls-Royce Ghost of the second generation: all-wheel drive!
The younger Rolls-Royce Ghost sedan was released in 2009 and surpassed the expectations of developers and marketers, becoming the most massive model of the British brand. Now it’s the turn of the second generation car.

As the creators assure, from its predecessor, the new Ghost directly inherited only the «Spirit of Ecstasy» figurine on the hood and umbrellas in the doors.

This is not surprising, because if the previous sedan was created on the platform of BMW’s «seven», then the new Rolls-Royce Ghost is almost completely unified with the older Phantom sedan, which changed a generation three years ago.

Both models (and with them the Cullinan) are part of the signature Architecture of Luxury: an aluminum space frame with body panels from the same material suspended from it.

The wheelbase remains the same (3295 mm), but the standard Ghost has grown in length by 89 mm (up to 5546 mm), mainly due to the increased rear overhang. Width increased by 30 mm (up to 1978 mm).

At the same time, the curb weight practically did not change: 2490 instead of 2495 kg. An extended Ghost Extended is shown at the same time, but its parameters have not yet been named.

Fortunately, Rolls-Royce did not dare to dare to experiment with design. But the designers have minimized the number of «extra» lines on the body and made the silhouette of the sedan more dynamic.

The new Ghost was the first model to have the statuette not installed on the grille frame, but on a separate platform embedded in the hood. Separate running lights have been removed: now all the «light» is concentrated in single blocks, which also have laser-phosphor sections with a range of up to 600 meters.

The electric drive can still take over all the work of opening and closing the rear doors (you need to press a button to do this), but by default it now runs «in the background», helping the person who pulls or pushes the door.

In this case, the electric motor immediately stops «help» if the door is stopped, and fixes it in any intermediate position. Trunk volume — 507 liters.

The salon as a whole is traditional for a Rolls, but there are a few interesting points. For example, virtual devices appeared after the Phantom. And the Ghost is also the first in the range to have the optional spotlights on the front panel.

Similar to the ceiling, 860 tiny diodes are built into the panel in front of the passenger, creating a star effect. 1300 watt Bespoke audio system — with 18-channel amplifier.

The developers are especially proud of their work on noise reduction in the cabin: they have carefully designed and selected all key components and components (including the seat frames) so that their resonant frequency is the same.

In addition, more than 100 kg of soundproofing materials were used. An interesting detail: to reduce the noise of air flows, all channels of the ventilation system are polished to a mirror finish.

The whole concept was called the «Formula for Serenity» by the company. But at the same time, the developers make a reservation that the silence in the cabin of the flagship Phantom remained unsurpassed.

The new Ghost is powered by the same engine as the Phantom, a canonical 6.75L V12 with twin turbochargers, which is mounted entirely behind the front axle.

The power of the two models is the same (571 hp), but the thrust of the younger sedan is artificially limited (850 versus 900 Nm), and its maximum is available already at 1600 rpm.

The eight-speed «automatic» ZF is the same, but its switching logic is now also tied to the navigation system: for example, before lifting, the electronics preemptively engage a lower gear.

And here is the main technical metamorphosis: the new Ghost became the first all-wheel drive sedan of the Rolls-Royce brand! It has the same front-axle clutch transmission as the Cullinan crossover.

This made the Ghost much more obedient on winter roads, but had almost no effect on the dynamics: acceleration to 100 km / h takes 4.8 s instead of 4.9 s for the previous model. Top speed electronically limited to 250 km / h.

And a number of innovations apply to the chassis. The Phantom’s Magic Carpet Ride air suspension has been redesigned to become the Planar Suspension System.

The main trick is additional dampers, which are not attached to the lower (like conventional shock absorbers), but to the upper double wishbones of the front suspension: the creators promise that this solution increases straight-line stability and increases comfort.

Like the Phantom, the suspension is active: a stereo camera under the windshield reads the topography of the road in front of the car. It sends signals to the actuators, which use the anti-roll bars to change the position of the body. But this function only works at speeds up to 100 km / h. The Ghost also has a fully steerable chassis with a steering gear on the rear axle.

Rolls-Royce Ghost remained the most affordable model of the British brand, but it still rose in price.

If the first generation sedan entered the market at a price of 190 thousand pounds sterling, then a minimum of 250 thousand will be asked for a new model.

However, the older Phantom costs at least 370 thousand, so there will definitely not be Ghost without clients.
