The Seat Leon model has been the main driver of sales for the Spanish brand for several years, so the company is trying to maintain interest in its key car with regular updates.

And since more than three years have passed since the last thorough revision, the time has come for planned modernization. Moreover, in this case, we are talking about a full-fledged change of generations, which entailed global changes in all aspects: design, equipment and technology.

The presentation of the new Seat Leon 2020 family took place in Martorell, where the production of fourth generation machines will be launched. The start of sales of new items is scheduled for the second quarter of this year.

New design

A striking appearance has always been one of Leon’s main trump cards, and in the new generation the model has remained true to itself, despite the change in the stylistic line.

The fresh concept was first successfully tested on the Tarraco crossover, and now it is no less successfully adapted to the most popular Seat car. The transformations are very large-scale — the dimensions and proportions of the car, as well as the design of most body elements, have been revised.

In front, the new hatchback and wagon Seat Leon received a hexagon-shaped radiator grille shifted downward, an expressive bumper with large air intakes and fundamentally different headlights with diode optics (matrix devices are available as an option). The nose section has been extended by lengthening the bonnet and moving the roof struts rearward for a more dynamic profile.

The stern of the novelty flaunts a stylish LED strip of rear lampshades, stretching from side to side and complemented by spectacular strokes on the sides. The name of the model now flaunts in words on the boot lid under the brand logo.

In general, the new Leon was undoubtedly a success for the Spaniards, and the modified car with its bold shapes and outlines will clearly appeal to young people, who traditionally enjoy the Seat five-door passenger car in great demand.

A variety of versions should also play into the hands, because in addition to the standard versions, the new family has a sports modification FR. There is also a luxurious version of Xcellence with decorated with a scattering of «diamonds» false radiator and air intake.

The «fourth» Seat Leon is based on the improved MQB Evo platform, which allowed the body to be slightly stretched. The wheelbase has increased by 50 mm (up to 2686 mm), thanks to which the hatchback is 86 mm (4368 mm) longer, and the station wagon — by 93 mm (4642 mm).

At the same time, the width of both cars decreased by 16 mm (up to 1800 mm), and the height decreased by 3 mm (up to 1456 mm for the hatchback and 1448 mm for the «barn»). Aerodynamics improved by 8% after the update.

In terms of interior architecture, the new Leon followed in the footsteps of its sister Golf. There are no explicit borrowings, but the concept is the same — it is characterized by rigor, minimalism and functionality.

The electronic equipment is the most advanced. Even the base model relies on a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. There are two options for the multimedia system — with a screen of 8.25 and 10 inches. Among the declared functionality is support for Apple CarPlay / Android

Auto interfaces (wireless Bluetooth or WLAN is available for Apple gadgets), gesture recognition, Internet connection via a built-in eSIM module. Qi wireless charging is available at an additional cost.

In addition to the above options, the new Seat Leon has three-zone climate control Climatronic, keyless entry, electronic handbrake, USB connectors in front and rear, contour diode interior lighting, 16-18-inch wheels.

The list of assistance systems includes adaptive cruise control with a predictive function (based on the readings of the navigator), lane keeping assistant (controls the lane at speeds up to 210 km / h), Emergency Assist emergency braking (stops the car if there is no action from the driver), tracking noise when leaving the car Exit Warning.

The boot capacity of the Leon hatchback remains the same — 380 liters, while the cargo compartment of the Sportstourer station wagon has added 30 liters and is now ready to accept at least 617 liters.

Specifications

The Seat Leon engine range of the 4th generation includes a lot of different-caliber power units. The range of gasoline engines includes:

• «Turbotroyka» 1.0 TSI (90 or 110 hp);

• «Quartet» 1.5 TSI (130 or 150 hp);

• «Quartet» 2.0 TSI (190 HP)

The 1.0 TSI (110 hp) and 1.5 TSI (150 hp) motors can be complemented by the mHEV mHEV system, which consists of a 48-volt starter-generator and a lithium-ion battery.

Versions with such power plants are equipped with only a 7-speed «robot» DSG (conventional variations are also equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission) and are designated eTSI.

The new Leon has two diesel engines: both have a volume of 2.0 liters, but the output is different — 115 or 150 hp.

A less powerful unit is combined with a manual transmission, a 150-horsepower engine — with «mechanics» or «robot».

«Senior» 2.0 TDI can also work with the 4Drive all-wheel drive system offered for the station wagon.

The line also includes a 1.5 TGI «methane» engine (130 hp) with three 17.3 kg cylinders, which is enough to cover 440 km. And finally, the Seat Leon received a full hybrid eHybrid modification.

It is powered by a 1.4-liter TSI and a 6-speed «robot» with an integrated electric motor. In total, the installation produces 204 hp.

The rechargeable battery with a capacity of 13 kW * h allows you to drive about 60 km on one electric traction.
