A full-fledged crossover smart: Geely platform, Chinese assembly and global model status.

The electric parkcar is still presented as a concept, but we will not have to wait long for the production version. According to preliminary data, the base crossover will be rear-wheel drive.

The smart brand switched its models to electric power back in 2018, and a year later the Daimler concern stopped owning it alone: a joint venture with the Chinese holding Geely was created.

The development of the brand is mainly engaged in the Chinese, they are responsible for the design and promotion, and in the Celestial Empire will set up production of the upcoming cars.

Well, the firstborn of the «new wave» will be a crossover, of course — and it will be the first full-scale production SUV in the range.

Presented at the IAA Mobility in Munich (where the show moved from Frankfurt), the crossover is still in the status of a concept, as evidenced by its name — Concept #1, but the production version will not have to wait long: the assembly line will be next year, and it will take much from the forerunner.

The smart Parkette is built on the SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) platform developed by Geely especially for «electric cars».

A liftback Zeekr 001 is based on the same «bogie» (Zeekr is new premium sub-brand Geely), it will be the basis of some future Volvo (Swedish brand belongs to the Chinese).

The length of smart Concept #1 is 4290 mm, width — 1910 mm, height — 1698 mm, wheelbase — 2750 mm.

That is in its dimensions crossover is close to the European Renault Captur and Mini Countryman, while distance between the axles of Smart is even more (the model has Renault — 2639 mm, Mini — 2670 mm). Well and for comparison, the dimensions of current smart forfour: 3495/1665/1554 mm, wheelbase — 2494 mm.

If the Chinese are responsible for the technique, the design is «drawn» by the German team.

Headlights and taillights of the crossover are made in the form of bars, consisting of a set of LED triangles, which in addition can flicker in time with the music.

Also smart Concept #1 got a glass roof with built-in glowing rectangles, 21-inch wheels, and frameless doors without handles (opened with the help of touch screens).

Parkette has no center column, the rear doors open counterclockwise, LED lighting is also on the plug instead of the grille and on the sills.

However, the commercial SUV probably will have conventional doors, and luminous elements cut down.

The Concept #1 has interior for four people, but smart has already declared that it is a «chip» of a prototype; a serial model will have five seats.

Gold trimming won’t be saved as well, and «floating» front panel can be kept as well as multimedia system 12,8 inches «riveted» to it.

The conveyor version is also promised to be updated «by air», a parking assistant, adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping system.

No word yet on the engines. According to unofficial data, the base smart crossover will have one electric motor mounted on the rear axle, and a battery capacity of about 70 kWh, with which it can travel 500 km.

However, the «range» is calculated on the outdated NEDC cycle. The SEA platform also provides for two electric motors, which means that it is likely to be offered in all-wheel drive version.

The first market for the model will be China, but local «exclusive» parket will not be — it will be sold in other countries, including Europe.

From Russia smart has left after its actual sitikars fortwo and forfour have finally turned «green». No word yet on the return of the brand to our market.
