The 2021 Subaru Forester is considered one of the best crossovers in its class. The Japanese model has earned this title largely due to its excellent off-road capabilities, which are partly provided by a permanent all-wheel drive, which redistributes torque along the axles, taking into account the current situation.

Neither the Nissan X-Trail nor the Mitsubishi Outlander have similar characteristics. However, this does not limit the capabilities of the car.

Forester is equipped with extremely reliable 2 and 2.5 liter boxer engines, which are complemented by an equally robust CVT.

Prices for the Japanese novelty start in Russia at 2.22 million rubles. This amount includes an electric drive for the trunk and driver’s seat, several airbags and an extended security complex, a multimedia system.

Optionally, this list is expanded with premium acoustics, a larger touchscreen, an off-road assistant and other equipment.

Subaru engineers did not significantly adjust the technical characteristics of their own model, adding equipment that provides the most comfortable off-road travel.

Specifications

Despite belonging to the crossover class, the Subaru Forester is built for off-road driving. To do this, the engineers lowered the center of mass as low as possible, achieved the ideal weight distribution and supplemented the car with a permanent all-wheel drive, which redistributes the torque between the axles in the proportion that the current situation dictates.

The crossover suspension is no less high-quality. It has standard MacPherson struts in front. At the rear, the manufacturer has placed double wishbones with a sufficiently long travel, thanks to which the suspension “swallows” even large irregularities well.

The Forester is equipped with 2 boxer engines with direct fuel injection. The basic role is played by a 2-liter unit, which develops up to 150 hp. power and 196 N * m of torque.

In top-end modifications, a 2.5-liter engine appears under the hood of the crossover. Its maximum power was increased to 185 hp. at 239 N * m of torque. Each of these motors is combined with a continuously variable variator, which is complemented by a robust chain drive.

The total length of the Japanese novelty reaches 4625 mm with a wheelbase of 2670 mm. The crossover is 1815 mm wide and 1730 mm high. The ground clearance is 220 mm.

Handling and off-road performance

As noted, the 2021 Subaru Forester is built for off-road driving. By default, the Japanese model is complemented by a proprietary system that reconfigures the operation of the transmission, engine, steering and other equipment depending on the current situation.

In particular, such equipment greatly simplifies the descent from the mountain. An equally important role in ensuring excellent cross-country ability is played by the aforementioned all-wheel drive, high ground clearance and a successful configuration of the front and rear bumpers.

In terms of handling, there are no complaints from the owners of the Forester. The Japanese crossover confidently holds the road, enters corners well and quickly restores its position in the event of a skid. However, in terms of maneuverability, this model is inferior to many competitors.

Maintenance costs

The Forester is considered both cheap and expensive to maintain. The first can be explained by the fact that most of the design details of the Japanese model are extremely reliable.

So, the variator, due to the chain drive implemented in it, even with increased loads, will require repair no earlier than after 250 thousand kilometers. Both boxer engines last longer. Suspension parts are also characterized by good endurance.

The main disadvantage of the Forester is that the parts are too expensive. In addition, the elimination of some problems in the engine compartment requires the dismantling of the motor, which significantly increases the cost of repairs.

Dynamic performance and fuel consumption

The Forester with the starting boxer engine reaches its first 100 km / h in 10.3 seconds. The maximum speed of the crossover in this version is limited to 193 km / h.

The appearance of a more powerful engine leads to a change in these indicators, respectively, up to 9.5 seconds and 207 km / h. At the same time, the average fuel consumption varies within 7.2-7.4 liters.

Design

After the modernization, Forester retained its recognizable shape, but also acquired several new parts.

The crossover’s radiator grill has a trapezoidal shape and is lined with many small horizontal slats. To the side of it is a fairly large LED optics, under which the manufacturer has placed a two-section niche reserved for fog lights and ventilation holes.

Along the bottom, engineers have laid a plastic body kit that fits around the wheel arches and side doors. At the stern, the original lanterns with LED lights stand out.

The Forester’s interior is made in premium style. The interior is lined with artificial leather, the color of which varies depending on the preferences of the buyer.

Almost the entire part of the center console is occupied by a protruding touchscreen monitor, above which there is another compact screen, and below it is a climate control unit with large washers.

The transmission tunnel is located quite low in relation to the driver’s seat, which negatively affects ergonomics.

Thanks to its relatively large size, the Forester can comfortably seat three adults in the rear seat. The luggage compartment holds up to 550 liters of cargo. With the rear row backs folded down, this figure rises to 1,775 liters.

The Japanese model has already entered the Russian market at the time of this writing. In our country, the car is imported directly from the home car factory.
