The 2021 Suzuki Across is a sports utility vehicle with electronic all-wheel drive.
In August 2019, Toyota and Suzuki formed an alliance. The auto giants exchanged shares in the amount of 5% of the total and everything seemed to be quiet. But with the release of the new Suzuki Across, the news has found a second wind, because at first glance you can see that the new SUV is like two peas in a pod similar to the RAV4 and its Chinese Wildlander counterpart.

What is remarkable about the novelty is that it will be exported to the European market, we will consider below.

Technical stuffing.

As is already clear, the 2021 model will be based on the same platform as the representative from Toyota. So the crossover will receive electric power steering, MacPherson strut front suspension and double wishbone rear (independent), ventilated brakes at the front and conventional disc at the rear. Also included is an adjustable steering column and center differential lock.

In terms of engine range and trim levels, the Across will be uncontested and exclusively hybrid. On board is 306 hp, which is provided by a 2.5-liter 177 hp petrol engine (exactly the same as on the RAV4), an electric train on the front axle with 182 hp. and a small 54-horsepower electric attachment on the rear axle.

In terms of transmission, here is a variable gearbox and, as is already clear, the E-Four all-wheel drive (also the work of Toyota engineers).
In terms of battery, the lithium-ion unit received a volume of 18.1 kWh and provides a range of 75 km purely on electric traction. Not a bad result, considering that most modern hybrids are only 50 km away. Quite a significant competitive advantage.

Onboard equipment

As for the equipment, we have before us the maximum filling of the same RAV4. Buyers will be able to use:

An extensive list of ABS, EBD, BAS, ESP, TCS, DAC, HAC, AFS and LKA systems;
Light, rain and tire pressure sensors;
Starting the engine from the button;
Keyless access;
Adaptive cruise control;
Wireless charging;
Front and rear parking sensors.
It also contains:
Electric drive of glass and trunk;
Heated side mirrors, front and rear windows, steering wheel, washer nozzles and each seat;
8-position adjustment of the driver’s seat and 4-position for the passenger (with memory);
Power connector;
6 airbags including curtains;
All-round visibility and monitoring of blind spots;
Navigation, immobilizer and alarm.

Also, adaptive cruise is equipped with a camera for monitoring driver fatigue, traffic sign recognition and the ability to emergency braking if necessary.
In general, in terms of safety, Suzuki’s SUV is (if I may say so) no less safe than its Toyota counterpart.

Body and dimensions

In appearance, it is worth noting that Across is more like Wildlander — the same RAV4, only slightly redesigned for the Chinese buyer. It is important to note here that the SUV is not just similar, it is exactly the same, if you do not take into account the new radiator grille and revised bumper.

The same «square» arches, the same stern, the same silhouette and stamping. It is not a fact that Across will sell well even with its own advantage. Car enthusiasts really do not like it when they try to foist a copy-paste on them, and even at the price of a BMW X5.

Dimensions are also similar. Only the length has increased by 5 mm due to the new bumper.
The novelty is standardly equipped with 19-inch light alloys. By the way, they didn’t bother with the design either.

The cabin is also all familiar, if you remember the RAV4. The filling corresponds to the top-end configuration:

8-inch on-board computer sewn into the dashboard;
2-inch touchscreen of the multimedia complex;
Audio system with 6 speakers;
AUX and USB connectors;
Steering wheel music control joystick;
2-zone climate;
Leather trim, etc.

By design, the set includes two cupholders, a metal edging of the central tunnel, powerful audio systems on the center console, a two-level torpedo architecture, a powerful armrest between the front seats and a folding armrest on the rear sofa.

Competitors

Since we only have a hybrid configuration, it makes sense to compare the new product with other electrified SUVs this year.
Given the rather substantial price tag, the car enthusiast can pay attention to: BMW X5, Audi Q5, Opel Grandland X and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV.

Price and start date

The manufacturer does not even hide that the new SUV is assembled on the same assembly line as the RAV4 (Japanese assembly). True, the design refinement, it seems, is already underway at Suzuki’s facilities.

With regard to the start of sales, European dealers expect a new crossover in September 2020.
For the price, a little surprise. From now on, Across becomes the most expensive model of the brand. The initial price of the hybrid is 3.44 million rubles, while the maximum price tag for the RAV4 is 2.7 million rubles.
