Volkswagen has introduced a new electric crossover coupe, the ID.5.
The German brand has revealed an all-electric coupe-shaped crossover, the ID.5.
The novelty is also presented in a more powerful GTX version. The ID.4 looks a lot like the previously shown ID.4 crossover.
Volkswagen continues to grow its all-electric lineup with the ID.5 being unveiled a couple of hours ago.
The model will come in two variants — the standard and the more powerful GTX — with three packages and three electric motor options.
Both versions of the new model share the same wheelbase and overall length, though the ID.5 has a coupe-like roof, which is what sets it apart from the ID.4’s more traditional bodywork.
Although the ID.5 is based on VW’s MEB architecture, it is not a complete copy of the ID.4.
Unlike the ID.4, the new ID.5 comes with a single battery pack — a 77-kilowatt-hour capacity.
It is connected to one of three electric motors, depending on the package — ID.5 Pro, ID.5 Pro Performance or ID.5 GTX.
Both the Pro and Pro Performance have rear-mounted electric motors, with the ID.5 Pro developing 171 hp. (128 kW) and boasts acceleration times from 100 km/h in 10.4 seconds.
Pro Performance develops 201 hp and can get over the first «hundred» in 8.4 seconds.
Both versions of the model have a top speed of 160 km/h. The ID.5 GTX gets a two-motor all-wheel-drive configuration, which develops 295 hp. (220 kW), accelerating the crossover to 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds with a top speed of 180 km/h.
VW says Pro Performance is projected to provide up to 520 kilometers of range in Europe’s WLTP test cycle. The GTX has a slightly lower range of 480 kilometers.
The lightweight aerodynamic drag coefficient of 0.26, which is 0.02 better than the ID.4, helps the ID.5 provide better range.
The ID.5’s sloping roof line really «eats up» the model’s cargo space, which offers 549 liters with the rear seats up and 1,561 liters with the seats down. These figures are lower than the 848 and 1,817 liters in the ID.4.
Inside, the ID.5 looks exactly like the ID.4, with the same infotainment screen and digital instrument cluster.
The GTX models have perforated interior trim on the seats for added style.
VW has not provided any pricing information, but that data should be available closer to the model’s availability date.
