Aiways U6 2023.

Chinese electric car startup Aiways will launch its second model on the market in the coming days — the mid-size U6 crossover with a sloping back.

Buyers will be offered three versions with varying range, but only front-wheel drive.

The startup Aiways was founded in 2017 by former top managers of the SAIC concern and the Chinese office of Volvo, and they invited former supercar developer Roland Gumpert to the role of chief engineer.

The ambitions of the young company were great, but as is often the case, numerous subjective and objective difficulties prevented them from being realized.

In China last year, the sales of Aiways amounted to a little over 3,000 cars, and in Europe (the market was originally named a priority) — less than 1,000.

Aiways today produces the only model — a mid-size crossover U5 on its own modular platform MAS (More Adaptable Structure), and on October 13 the second model — the coupe-like crossover U6 will finally go on sale.

Aiways U6 was announced in the spring of 2020, then it was reported that Ken Okuyama, former chief designer of Pininfarina and creator of the supercar Ferrari Enzo had a hand in its design.

The aerodynamic drag coefficient is only 0.248. The Aiways U6 was due on the home market at the end of last year, but the sales launch was delayed by almost a year.

At the heart of the Aiways U6 is the same MAS platform as the Aiways U5: the only electric motor is located on the front axle and rotates the front wheels, its maximum output is 160 kW (218 hp) and 315 Nm, acceleration to 100 km/h takes 7 seconds, the maximum speed is limited at 160 km/h.

The front suspension is the McPherson type, rear suspension is independent multilever. Overall length of the crossover — 4805 mm, width — 1880 mm, height — 1641 mm, wheelbase — 2800 mm.

The battery capacity of the Aiways U6 depends on the version: it is 63 kWh on the base Play, 72 kWh on the Cyber Play version, and 88 kWh on the Top Play version.

The range on a single charge on the legacy NEDC cycle is 503, 580 and 650 km, respectively.

The interior of the Aiways U6 is designed in the same minimalist vein as the Aiways U5, but there are no common details.

The instrument panel is reduced to a narrow strip with a diagonal of 8.2 inches. The multimedia touchscreen is 14.6 inches diagonal.

The powerplant mode selector is made in the form of a massive thrust control lever on a yacht or in an airplane.

An audio system by German company Magnat with karaoke function is announced in the equipment.

The panoramic glass roof is one of the largest in its class, its area exceeds 2 m2.

Prices for the Aiways U6 have not yet been announced, but for us they are only of abstract interest — Aiways is not going to enter the Russian market yet.
