Bentley Flying Spur Hybrid Revealed 2022. The Bentley Flying Spur sedan has a hybrid version.
In line with its Beyond100 strategy last year, Bentley will be fully electric by 2030.
However, the first battery model is not expected until 2025, while Bentley is training in hybrids.
The Bentley Bentayga Hybrid gasoline-electric crossover became serial two years ago, and now the second model has arrived — the Bentley Flying Spur Hybrid sedan.
The powertrain here isn’t from Bentayga. Since the Flying Spur itself is built on the same platform as the Porsche Panamera model, the hybrid installation is also borrowed from it.
The Panamera 4 E-Hybrid modification was introduced back in 2016, but British engineers made its power unit noticeably more powerful.
Under the hood, the same V6 2.9 petrol biturbo engine is installed as on the Panamera, but its output is increased from 330 hp. and 450 Nm to 416 hp. and 550 Nm.
The eight-stage preselective «robot» with a built-in electric motor (136 HP, 400 Nm) is the same. As a result, the hybrid system produces a peak 544 hp. and 750 Nm against the Panamerican 462 hp. and 700 Nm.
The lithium-ion traction battery with a capacity of 14.1 kWh is also borrowed from Porsche and is located under the boot floor.
On pure electric traction, the Flying Spur hybrid can travel up to 40 km in the WLTP cycle, and the maximum cruising range exceeds 700 km.
In addition to the EV Drive mode, the ride electronics have Hybrid and Hold presets, the latter is needed to maintain the level of charge in the traction battery, so that it is guaranteed to last for the «last mile» in electric mode.
The hybrid sedan turned out to be the heaviest in the range: curb weight — 2505 kg, while the Flying Spur V8 weighs 2330 kg, and the flagship version with the W12 engine — 2437 kg.
Accordingly, the dynamic characteristics of the hybrid are the most modest in this trio. Acceleration to «hundreds» takes 4.3 s (versus 4.1 and 3.8 s), and the maximum speed is 285 km / h (versus 318 and 333 km / h, respectively).
Visually, the hybrid sedan differs from purely petrol versions only by the nameplates on the front fenders and an additional hatch in the left rear fender, under which the charging connector is hidden.
And the signs of a hybrid in the cabin are only a button for switching driving modes on the central tunnel and additional menu sections in the media system.
The main markets for the hybrid should be Europe and China (here the «small» engine will significantly reduce the customs duty). Deliveries of the machines will begin later this year.
Next, hybrid versions will appear in related coupes and convertibles Bentley Continental.
By the way, Bentley shared another piece of news at the same time. The company began cooperation with … the Scottish whiskey producer Macallan.
Partners promise joint development of certain products and new projects, and also remind on duty: «Do not drink while driving.»
This collaboration suggests only one thing: Are Bentley cars going to be self-driving faster than expected?
UPDATE: The Flying Spur hybrid will appear on the Russian market as well, although the Bentayga Hybrid crossover is not presented here. The start of sales is scheduled for the third quarter of 2022.
