BMW has unveiled the second generation 4-Series coupe, called the G22. The car received an unusual appearance, new technologies, as well as gasoline and diesel engines operating in a mild hybrid scheme.

The main distinguishing feature of the coupe is the double grille with huge «nostrils», made in the style of the BMW Concept 4, which was shown in September 2019 as a harbinger of the production 4-Series coupe. At the same time, the company noted that the «nostrils» are not only an aesthetic function — they are designed to supply additional air to the new six-cylinder engine.

The new «four» was built on the modular CLAR platform. Thus, the coupe has shared the main components and assemblies with the new generation 3-Series model. At the same time, the second BMW 4-Series differs from the sedan in completely different chassis settings, a lower center of gravity and a drag coefficient reduced to 0.25, as well as a rear track widened by 23 mm. The weight distribution along the axes is ideal — 50:50.

The engine range of the new BMW 4-Series includes four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The top version (M440i xDrive) was equipped with a new three-liter inline gasoline «six» with two turbines, developing 374 hp. from. and 500 N • m of torque. The motor works in conjunction with an eight-speed automatic transmission ZF and all-wheel drive.

The power unit operates according to the mild hybrid scheme — with a 48-volt on-board system and a compact electric motor, which provides an additional 11 horsepower during sharp accelerations. The BMW M440i xDrive is capable of reaching the first “hundred” in 4.5 seconds, and its maximum speed is electronically limited to 250 km per hour.

In addition, the two-liter turbo-fours with a capacity of 190 and 258 liters are included in the gasoline line. with., working with an eight-band «automatic». The diesel range is represented by a two-liter 190-horsepower engine, as well as three-liter «sixes» with a capacity of 286 and 340 horsepower. All «heavy fuel» engines, like the top-end gasoline engine, operate with a 48-volt starter-generator.

As for the interior, in the standard version the «four» is available with an 8.8-inch touchscreen of the seventh generation iDrive multimedia complex and a 5.1-inch color screen between the analogue dials of the instruments. In the top-end variants, the BMW 4-Series has a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 10.3-inch infotainment display.

In addition, the four received a navigator with the ability to update «over the air», a next-generation head-up display, as well as wireless connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The list of available electronic assistants includes advanced systems for keeping the car in the occupied lane and automatic emergency braking, as well as adaptive cruise control.

Serial production of the second generation BMW 4-Series will begin in Germany in July, and the first cars will reach Russia at the end of October 2020. A basic coupe with a 190-horsepower gasoline engine will cost 3,130,000 rubles, and for a top-end car with a 374-strong installation, depending on the configuration, you will have to pay from 4,550,000 to 5,260,000 rubles. Prices for cars with two-liter diesel engines range from 3,150,000 to 3,980,000 rubles.
