General Motors Corp. has unveiled what may be its latest old-school sports sedan, which should delight fans of the American car industry: a 677-horsepower compressor V8, self-locking rear-wheel drive, and a six-speed manual transmission as standard equipment.
«Automatic» is accessible too, but it is, as they say, for wimps.
We must give credit, since the appearance of the first Cadillac CTS-V in 2004, the handling of which tuned the German Nürburgring, U.S. sport sedans have become respected around the world, but the era of such cars coming to an end — to 2035, GM intends to completely switch to electric cars, and with this perspective does not make sense to spend money to develop new products with a powerful gasoline V8.
Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing presented today is a kind of gift to fans of old-school American car industry, going against the «green» discourse of GM, and it is made along the same lines as the CTS-V first generation, only with a small adjustment for the actual digital technology and components.
Under the hood is the good old bottom-shaft 6.2-liter LT4 V8, still from the last front-engine Chevrolet Corvette: 1.7-liter Eaton drive supercharger, aluminum Rotocast A356T6 heads, titanium intake valves, modified lubrication and crankcase ventilation systems, high performance intake and exhaust systems have achieved maximum 677 hp and 893 Nm — the most powerful production Cadillac in history!
For comparison, the BMW M5 CS presented the other day has «only» 635 hp and 750 Nm under the hood.
There is a 6-speed manual transmission Tremec in pair with compressor V8 by default, thus the electronics knows how to select optimum revolutions of the engine while shifting gears, and if you want you can switch without dumping gas at all.
Driving wheels are only rear, between them there is self-locking differential with electronic control and its own cooling circuit.
A 10-speed hydro-mechanical automatic with manual selection of steps by magnesium paddles is available as an option.
The Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing takes 3.7 seconds to 60 mph (96.56 km/h) and has a top speed of 322 km/h.
The suspension is designed for track loads and high temperatures Magnetic Ride Control 4.0 adaptive shock absorbers with reinforced supports and struts, stiffer springs, stiffer wishbone supports and hollow anti-roll bar stabilizers.
Brakes from Brembo — the largest of those that were installed on the Cadillac cars as standard: 398-millimeter discs and 6-piston calipers in front, 373-millimeter discs and 4-piston calipers at the rear.
Carbon ceramic brakes are available as an option. Forged wheels run on 275/35 ZR 19 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires in the front and 305/30 ZR 19 in the rear.
The body received a new, blown-in-tube aerodynamic dodger: front bumper with enlarged air intakes, rear bumper with integrated diffuser, vent grilles on front fenders, spoiler on trunk lid, underbody flaps.
The optional extended carbon-fiber body kit reduces lift by 75 percent.
Inside — the front seats with enhanced side support and 18 electric adjustments (at extra charge — with ventilation and massager), the audio system AKG with 15 speakers, 12-inch fully digital dashboard, sports steering wheel, carbon fiber trim.
The Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing has a base price of $84,990 and applications are already being accepted, but dealers won’t get the finished cars until the summer.
Each specimen will be factory tested on the track, and the engines are hand-assembled.
We should add that the regular Cadillac CT5 debuted in the spring of 2019, and 2020 was its first full year of sales, during which, according to CarSalesBase resource, 14,711 copies of this model were sold in the United States.
Meanwhile, the BMW Five sold 26,785 units in the U.S. in 2020, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class sold 25,499 units and the Audi A6 sold 10,535 units.
