Chevrolet Equinox EV: the brand’s cheapest electric crossover, there’s a twin-engine version.
General Motors Corp. has revealed details about the new Chevrolet Equinox EV compact electric crossover, but it won’t go on sale until a year from now, in the fall of 2023.
The Equinox EV is a very important and currently the cheapest electric model in Chevrolet’s U.S. lineup: the starting price will be around $30,000, while the «ancient» subcompact Bolt EV now costs from $31,500 in the United States.
Design of Chevrolet Equinox EV was declassified at the beginning of this year and collected a lot of enthusiastic reviews, and now there was more or less full-fledged premiere: key specifications and equipment were revealed.
The Equinox EV is based on the newest GM modular platform Ultium, that is the electric namesake has no relation to petrol and rather successful in the USA Chevrolet Equinox and therefore it is senseless to compare them from the technical point of view.
GM does not disclose dimensions of Equinox EV, but according to Autoblog magazine the electric crossover is longer, wider and lower than petrol one and therefore looks more athletic and presentable.
Approximate overall length — 4839 mm, wheelbase — 2954 mm, that is, by Russian and European measures it is more likely a medium-sized, not compact crossover.
But in the U.S., Chevrolet has targeted the Blazer EV crossover, which debuted in July, at the local midsize segment.
The Chevrolet Equinox EV comes in five powertrains (1LT, 2LT, 3LT, 2RS, 3RS) and two powertrains to choose from: the single-engine, front-wheel drive model produces a maximum of 213 hp and 328 Nm, and the two-engine, all-wheel drive model produces 294 hp and 469 Nm.
Battery capacity has not been announced, but judging by the mileage on a single charge, there will be at least two variants.
The base front-wheel-drive version can go 250 miles (402 km) on a single charge on the EPA cycle, with the higher-capacity battery — 300 miles (482 km), the range of the two-motor Equinox EV — 280 miles (450 km).
Maximum charging capacity is 150 kW, and it will top up the range by 70 miles (112 km) in 10 minutes. There is an onboard 3 kW power outlet in the cabin.
Dynamic characteristics of the crossover are not disclosed, but it is known that acceleration and deceleration can be controlled with one pedal — gas pedal, which activates regenerative braking when released.
Interior of Equinox EV is made in the spirit of all last mass crossovers Chevrolet — for example, recently presented in China Seeker: a two-screen display panel, central air ducts blowing in the navel, round side air ducts, the separate block of a microclimate with physical keys and handles.
The instrumental screen is 11 inches, multimedia — 11 or 17.7 inches, with a projection screen on the windshield available for an extra charge.
In the basic equipment declared the latest electronic driver assistants, including automatic emergency braking when reversing and contra-vehicle steering, and for an additional fee offered HD-camera all-around view, digital interior rear-view mirror and autopilot second level Super Cruise.
The trunk volume with folded rear seats is 1,614 liters, there is no additional front luggage compartment in the front.
Exterior and interior of Equinox EV depend on a complete set, the size of wheel disks — 19, 20 or 21 inches.
The exterior door handles are retractable. The body is available in two-tone paint and a panoramic glass roof with a sliding sunroof.
The Chevrolet Equinox EV will go on sale in the fall of 2023 in the 2RS Limited Edition, and all regular trims, including the most budget-friendly 1LT for $30,000, will hit the market during 2024.
The Chevrolet Equinox EV will be produced at GM’s Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico, where the gasoline Equinox for the U.S. market is also assembled.
