Ferrari Roma 612hp 2021. Ferrari creates a modern GT without relying on the design tricks of the past.

In Roma’s Ferrari, the start button is not a button. It’s an iPad-like touch switch on the bottom of the steering wheel.

And this is just one of the many functions assigned to the steering wheel. Even after 30 hours spent with the car, we still opened new ones.

Here Ferrari doesn’t rely on its heritage. This is just the second GT coupe with a front-engined V8 engine in the brand’s history.

The first of these was the 2018 GTC4Lusso T, which was an updated FF with four smaller cylinders.

No, with Roma, Ferrari focused on creating a 21st century grand-touring car with an almost entirely digital interface and no silly retractable roof.

Sure, the hardtop Portofino convertible still exists and there are plenty of Portofinos in Roma, but the Roma is about 200 pounds lighter and 20 horsepower more powerful, with a 612-horsepower version of Ferrari’s 3.9-liter twin-turbo V-engine.

The upcoming Portofino M will match this result, but will not correct the weight discrepancy. And while all three Ferraris have engines roaring like artillery, the Roma is the most beautiful.

He has a shark face. The fenders expand like Sophia Loren’s sigh, and there are no holes, vents or potholes in the body.

The sharp-angled taillights are not at all like regular round Ferrari cars. The Roma and Portofino share a common 105.1-inch wheelbase and base suspension design, but the Roma is 0.7 inches lower, 1.4 inches wider, and measures 183.3 inches long, which is 2.7 inches longer overall.

Peak torque of 561 lb-ft is reached at 3000 rpm and stays at it up to 5750 rpm, as well as redline at 7500 rpm. Pull out the hood and the Ferrari V-8 looks as good as the body. There is no plastic soundproofing here.

Pull out the carbon fiber right-hand steering column derailleur and the Magna’s rear-mounted eight-speed dual-clutch transmission loads first gear.

Roma is the first Ferrari GT to feature Race settings for stability and traction control. Turn the manettino selector on the steering wheel to the Race position and the car growls and transitions to flying on the ground.

The eight-speed transmission responds instantly to paddle shifting. Downshift into a corner and the car crouches flat, grabs the top and chatters confidently.

The system allows for a bit of tail slip, but on public roads it is difficult to achieve cornering speeds at which the 285 / 35ZR-20 Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires will fail.

What’s available even in Comfort mode is the perfectly calibrated steering and the thrill of the 245 / 35ZR-20 Michelins’ front bite feel in the surface.

We expect this Ferrari to surpass 60mph in 3.1 seconds when start mode is activated, but the dramatic exhaust effect and engine thrust make it seem even faster.

And the rum beckons at three-digit speeds. It also has a fun back seat and a reasonable size trunk of 10 cubic feet.

Rum prices start at $ 222,420. The version shown here carried an optional payload that priced it at $ 316,240.

Skip the $ 11,812 carbon fiber rear diffuser, the $ 5,906 front spoiler that you’re sure to scratch, the $ 4,725 carbon fiber dashboard inserts and a few other details, and the Roma could be a great Ferrari for a quarter of a million dollars.

In the world of prancing horses, this is a bargain.
