McLaren F1 creator has unveiled the revolutionary Gordon Murray Automotive T.50 hypercar.
Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA) has unveiled the new T.50 supercar.

The car was presented by Gordon Murray, the author of the legendary McLaren F1, which is considered the world’s first hypercar.

The car received a low-lying «nose» with a smooth finish and narrow air intakes, a huge rounded windshield, large windows in the doors and transparent panels on the roof, a small air intake on the roof of the car and transparent parts of the rear panel with a gull hole.

At the end of last year, the British company Gordon Murray Automotive (GMA), founded by former Formula 1 car designer Gordon Murray, released the first details about the new T.50 supercar, and now the car has been shown in all its glory: the company has shared official photos, specifications, prices. and the planned start of production.

Not so long ago, Murray shared his plans for the production of a car that will not repeat the solutions he used in the development of the McLaren F1 supercar thirty years ago, but from a technical point of view, the new T.50 became a direct heir to the legendary two-door.

The car is designed according to the recipe of its predecessor, from the characteristic three-seater saloon to the crazy twelve-cylinder aspirated, located within the wheelbase.

The exterior design, lift doors and compact body dimensions (model length is 4352 mm, width and height — 1850 and 1164 mm, respectively) also add similarities to McLaren, but a number of unusual details fundamentally distinguish the new T.50 from the F1 model and all the others. supercars.

The main feature of the new creation by Gordon Murray is the active aerodynamics system with a fan.

Previously, he embodied this technology in the cars of the British racing team Brabham in the late seventies, and after forty years it found application in the T.50 supercar.

True, on a road car it is more complicated: the system has six modes of operation.

Two automatic modes are used during acceleration and deceleration, while the other four can be selected by the driver to increase downforce, improve aerodynamics for straight-ahead driving, or reduce fuel consumption.

Special air ducts are responsible for the ground effect: the air flows passing under the car body enter them and are accelerated at the outlet using a fan with a diameter of 40 cm located in the stern.

The result is the Venturi effect, which creates additional downforce, and the air flows above the roof are actively controlled wing.

At the same time, the system allows parallel cooling of the engine and transmission, and the vertical inlet prevents road debris from entering the fan.

By the way, in order not to disturb the aerodynamics of the body, the function of the side mirrors is performed by cameras, the image from which is displayed on the screens along the edges of the front panel.

The dry weight of the supercar was kept within a ton: the monocoque and body panels are made of carbon fiber, so the T.50 weighs only 986 kg.

In order not to add extra pounds, when developing the car, it was decided to abandon the use of an all-wheel drive transmission, so that the thrust from the engine is transmitted exclusively to the rear axle.

A light naturally aspirated V12 4.0 engine (663 hp, 467 Nm) with a block camber of 65 degrees was developed by Cosworth.

The unit weighing 178 kg is paired with a six-speed «mechanics» and can spin up to 12100 rpm, and with the help of a 48-volt starter-generator, its peak output in extreme V-Max mode reaches 700 «horses».

The supercar is powered by a naturally aspirated 3.9-liter V12 Cosworth engine producing 663 hp. power and 467 Nm of torque.

The Gordon Murray Automotive T.50 has a 400mm rear fan that rotates at 7,000 rpm. and runs on a 48-volt electric motor. The car weighs only 986 kilograms. The body and chassis are made of carbon fiber.

In order to save weight, the suspension design with steel springs and aluminum passive shock absorbers is devoid of elements that allow you to adjust its rigidity and ground clearance, and light forged multi-wide wheels (the dimension of Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires is 235/35 R19 at the front and 295/30 R20 at the rear), which are fastened with a central nut, are made of aluminum.

In addition, the T.50 is equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes with six-piston calipers on the front axle and four-piston calipers on the rear axle (the diameter of the brake discs reaches 370 mm at the front and 340 mm at the rear).

Alas, representatives of Gordon Murray Automotive are in no hurry to share the dynamic characteristics of the supercar — apparently, they will be published closer to the start of production, which is scheduled for 2022.

A total of one hundred cars will be produced, each of which will be developed with the direct participation of future owners: the cars are planned to be personalized and customized for a specific client.

The cost of Gordon Murray Automotive T.50 will be $ 3.08 million or 272,512,820 rubles.

The production of new items will begin in January 2022. A total of 100 units of the T.50 supercar will be produced.
