The 2021 Honda Insight is a five-seat hybrid sedan based on the latest Civic model. Its interior is spacious and uncluttered, but the car has a price tag below $ 30,000.

With a fuel efficiency of 52 mpg (or 4.5 liters per 100 kilometers) for 2021, the Insight offers new active safety features on select trim levels.

The sedan is powered by a 107 horsepower 1.5-liter inline 4-cylinder petrol engine that powers a generator that supplies power to the hybrid battery pack and a 129 horsepower electric motor that drives the front wheels. The total power reaches 250 horsepower.

The cabin is comfortable for four adults, but can hold up to five, and the trunk is large enough for a compact sedan with a volume of 15.1 cubic feet.

It is as safe as it is economical: it earned five stars in every NHTSA test and received the IIHS Top Safety Pick + rating.

Every Insight gets automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, active lane control, and traffic sign recognition. For model year 2021, EX and Touring models will add blind spot monitors with rear cross-traffic alert.

The EPA estimates fuel efficiency at 55 mpg city (4.5 liters per 100 kilometers), 49 miles on the highway, 52 miles in mixed mode. The top-of-the-line Touring model, with larger 17-inch wheels, consumes 4.6 liters per hundred kilometers in city mode.

The IIHS rated the Insight automatic emergency braking system «excellent» for collision avoidance at 12 and 25 mph.

Options and prices

Honda offers the Insight in LX, EX and Touring trims for model year 2021.

Honda Insight 2021.

• LX trims $ 23,885 including shipping charge and comes with fabric upholstery, 16 «wheels, one USB port, 5.0» infotainment display, Bluetooth connectivity and active safety features … It lacks a split-folding rear seat and pockets on the backrests of the front seats, but even more lacks a touchscreen with software that supports smartphone screen mirroring.

• $ 25,765 EX trim adds a 60/40 rear seat and 8.0-inch touchscreen with software supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as blind spot monitors and two USB charging ports.

• Touring trim costs $ 29,765 and includes a panoramic sunroof, navigation system, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control and 17-inch wheels.

The new Insight maintains the proportions and roofline of the Civic and blends them with the wider, mature front end from the Accord. The result is beautiful. Its sleek wheel arches make it look best in profile.

The salon is spacious, aesthetically pleasing in general. The low wide line lends a touch of style as it travels from the edges to the middle in a wide V.

The front seats are comfortable, albeit slightly low. The tilt and telescopic steering wheel allows for adjustable arm length.

There is more than 37 inches of legroom in the rear, which is enough for riders over a meter and eighty, although the bottom of the seats is thin, and three passengers in the back can easily bruise the back with their knees.

The 15.1 cubic feet of cargo space is the same as that of the midsize sedans. Honda did a great job with the packaging, as the battery not only doesn’t take up space in the trunk, it also doesn’t restrict the folding rear seat on the EX and Touring models.

Driving experience

Acceleration is not very powerful, but when you spend 4.5 liters per 100 kilometers, it doesn’t matter. In addition, the car is fine with acceleration to 100 km / h in about 9 seconds.

The small 1.5-liter inline 4-cylinder engine develops 107 horsepower and the electric motor produces 129 horsepower.

The mechanics of the hybrid setup on the Insight are different from other hybrids. In most cases, the Insight is powered by an electric motor only, as the engine is used primarily to power the batteries.

There is no direct relationship between engine speed and wheel speed. This can result in harsh noises from under the hood at slow speeds.

In some situations, the engine can drive the front wheels, although Honda claims this is rare.
The Insight four-wheel independent suspension absorbs road bumps well and is easy to handle.

The 2021 Honda Insight offers a lot at its base price: fantastic fuel economy, safety and space, combined with good looks. This is by far one of the best, if not the best, pricing in the basic vehicle market.
