Hyundai Bayon 2022: the new Hyundai SUV for Europe.
A new player has appeared in the European segment of B-class crossovers — the subcompact Hyundai Bayon 2022.

The model was developed specifically for the countries of the Old World, and therefore it was decided to name it in honor of one of the most beautiful places in France — the town of Bayonne, located in the south-west of the country.

The novelty should attract customers with a non-standard design, a spacious interior, a scattering of electronic assistants and a line of «environmentally friendly» power plants.

Sales of the Hyundai Bayon SUV will start in Europe this summer. The cars will be produced at a plant in Turkey, in the same place where the related Hyundai i20 hatchbacks are assembled (the models have a common platform). Prices and configurations will be announced later.

Dimensions and design

Unlike its Venue counterpart, the new Bayon is over four meters in length, reaching 4180 mm. Width was 1775 mm, height — 1490 mm, wheelbase — 2580 mm.

For versions with basic 15-inch wheels (tires 185/65 R15), the ground clearance is 165 mm, for versions with large 17-inch wheels (tires 205/55 R17) — 183 mm. There is also an intermediate 16th diameter, which provides for the installation of 195/55 R16 tires.

The exterior of the model is designed in the Sensuous Sportiness corporate style. Following the example of the last Santa Fe, the subcompact received a two-level lighting technology.

The main blocks, consisting of three sections, are located here under the thin horizontal stripes of navigation lights. Between the headlights is a solid grille with a silver insert at the bottom.

The wedge-shaped profile and arrow-shaped taillights add dynamism to the crossover. The feed looks expressive and original due to the visually enlarged rear window, which is, as it were, cut by a light strip.

For the newcomer Hyundai, there will be nine body colors available, including a new shade of Mangrove Green. The roof is optionally available in a contrasting Phantom Black finish.

The interior architecture of the new Hyundai Bayon is generally the same as that of the donor Hyundai i20. However, due to the increased dimensions, it is much more spacious here: the front passengers have a headroom of at least 1072 mm, and the rear ones — 882 mm.

The luggage compartment is also more spacious: with a five-seater layout, up to 411 liters of cargo can be placed under the shelf, with the second row seats folded down — 1205 liters.

The crossover has the most modern connection technologies. So, even the basic Display Audio multimedia system with an 8-inch screen allows you to «mirror» the screens of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphones without using wires.

In older trim levels, the size of the central display reaches 10.25 inches, and the functionality becomes even richer. Bluelink’s list of services includes Connected Routing cloud navigation, Live Parking Services and Online voice recognition.

There is also support for remote connection with the car through the application on the phone: you can remotely control the door locks and view technical information about the vehicle (for example, the amount of fuel in the tank).

Other equipment available for the SUV includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, wireless charging of gadgets, and Bose Premium acoustics.

There are three USB ports in the car: two in the front and one in the back (one of the front provides communication with the media center).

The standard set of SmartSense electronic assistants includes lane keeping, automatic braking (with detection of pedestrians and cyclists), monitoring of blind spots, warning of interference when reversing, and a number of other systems.

The Bayon engine range consists of small displacement gasoline units. The initial is a four-cylinder aspirated 1.2 MPI with 84 hp. and 118 Nm. It can only be combined with a 5-speed manual transmission.

Next comes the 1.0 T-GDi turbo engine with 100 and 120 hp power options.

For an engine with less boost, a 48-volt mild hybrid superstructure comes at an additional cost, while a 120-horsepower unit is equipped with it by default.

Cars with a 48 V starter generator instead of the classic 6-speed «mechanics» receive an iMT box, in which the clutch is not mechanically connected to the pedal (the closing / opening is controlled by the electronics).

Another three-cylinder engine can be combined with the «robot» 7DCT. The model is exclusively front-wheel drive.
