Production of Hyundai Veloster hatchback will end in July.
Hyundai is going to stop production of Veloster in South Korea in July, South Korean edition Hankyung reports citing unnamed sources.
According to the recently published information Hyundai Motor Company completely refuses production of the Veloster model after 11 years of its production.
It is claimed that this step will support production of the next-generation crossover Hyundai Kona and improve sales of the «charged» sedan Elantra N, also known as Avante N in Korea.
The announcement of the discontinuation of the Veloster follows a report earlier this month that production of the original Ioniq hatchback would also cease in July.
Hyundai currently produces exclusively the Veloster N, abandoning the assembly of the standard version of the model.
It is currently being produced on one of the production lines at Hyundai’s Ulsan 1 plant, where the Kona crossover is assembled.
With the arrival of the next-generation Kona next year, the Veloster’s departure from the factory’s assembly line should leave more room for the more successful Kona crossover.
The market — both local (Korean — editor’s note) and global — favors the Elantra N over the Veloster N.
The next Kona is expected to be fully introduced in 2023, given that the updated model wasn’t introduced until late 2020. There is no confirmation of this timeline yet.
Hyundai won’t be scrapping the asymmetric hatchback just yet.
The Veloster will remain on the market despite falling sales
Last year, sales of the Hyundai Veloster almost halved, but the Koreans are not going to stop production of the asymmetric hatchback yet, although the range of available versions will be significantly reduced.
It is still early to say what versions of the hatchback will be discontinued, but the top-of-the-line 275 hp Veloster N will obviously stay in the lineup.
It just underwent a minor update last year, getting an 8DCT robotized transmission with two «wet» clutches and eight gears, as well as the N Grin Shift system, which increases turbocharger pressure for 20 seconds, thereby providing a seven percent increase in torque — 378 Nm instead of 353.
The Veloster N with the robot accelerates to a hundred in 5.6 seconds.
