Kia EV9 2022: The flagship electric crossover.

Kia is the first major automaker in the world to announce full electrification of its lineup.

In confirmation of their intentions Kia continues to acquaint the public with new electric cars: after Soul EV, Niro EV and EV6, the big electric crossover Kia EV9 of 2022 model year is presented to the public.

It is still only a concept, but the huge 4.9-meter SUV gets flagship status in advance, and also becomes a real showcase, demonstrating a number of interesting technical and engineering solutions.

Review

The Kia EV9 will turn out to be a close relative of the EV6, as it operates the same E-GMP platform grounded for electric powertrains.

This time it was appreciably stretched to give the flagship a 3.1-meter wheelbase.

The car itself also looks impressive thanks to the horizontal roof line, angular body design and large 22-inch wheels with an unusual three-dimensional design.

Attention is drawn to the lack of a central pillar, forcing the designers to think carefully about the frame of the body, additionally incorporating a huge panoramic roof.

Exterior design

At the presentation, Kia’s designers admitted that the exterior was inspired by crystal and rock shapes.

A lot of sharp angles and facets of the body are successfully complemented by a very unusual optics in the form of curved strips.

However, if the rear are present only Y-lights, then in front, in addition to the LED lights, through the front stub, replacing the usual grille, additional luminous elements break through.

It looks beautiful, besides in this light composition there is a place and the main headlights in the form of vertically lined bright LED-modules.

The conceptual Kia EV9 2022 has some curious solutions in other parts of the body.

For example, these are retractable rails, which can hide in the roof to improve aerodynamics of the body.

Also, between the hood and windshield you can find a small solar panel, which is designed to slightly recharge the traction battery.

Dimensions of the Kia Concept EV9 are 4930x2055x1790 mm, and the wheelbase is 3100 mm. Thus, by the distance between the axles it surpasses Telluride 5-meter flagship by as much as 20 cm.

It has a cruising range of 480 kilometers and support for 350-kilowatt plug-in charging, which will increase energy reserves from 10 to 80% in 20 to 30 minutes.

One thing is certain: the floor of a serial automobile obviously will not be so thin as in a concept.

Interior .

Surprisingly, interior of the crossover EV9 is deprived of sharp corners. On the contrary, it was decided to round all edges.

The front panel with a big dual display and a steering wheel-steering wheel looks conceptual yet and not «serial», but the system of transformation of seats can appear in cars of the nearest future.

Transformable interior provides the ability to rotate 180 degrees of the seats of the first row and fold the second row into a large table.

Thus, passengers of the first and third row can face each other.

The developers separately emphasize that all the interior materials are exclusively recycled materials, and the leather upholstery is vegan — made of polyester fabric coated with PVC.

Other original exterior features include 22-inch wheels with triangular slots, a solar panel in the air duct area on the «hood,» retractable roof rails, cameras instead of mirrors, and rear doors that swing open against the traffic.

Inside, the front panel features a single 27-inch screen for all driver and passenger needs, and the original retractable steering wheel.

The interior is finished with materials made from recycled fishing nets (flooring), plastic bottles and wool (seats), and leatherette.

The interior space can be transformed. In addition to the riding «active» mode, there are two modes for parking.

«Pause» is when people on the first and third rows sit facing each other, and the second row seats turn into a table.

In «Pleasure» mode, all the seats are rotated 180 degrees, and the luggage door opens: according to the designers’ idea, so the passengers will admire the scenery without leaving the car.

Technical stuffing and characteristics

During the presentation of electric crossover Kia EV9 2022 it was not said anything about the powertrain capacity of the car.

From the available information — only the range of autonomous driving, which, according to the Koreans, will be about 480 kilometers.

The car is also promised a powerful 350-kilowatt recharging, which will give 80% of battery capacity in 20-30 minutes.
