Kimera EVO37: a modern interpretation of the legendary Lancia 037.

The Italian company Kimera Automobili presented the EVO37 coupe, made based on the legendary and very rare Lancia 037. The same people who designed the Lancia 037 took part in the development of the novelty, so that the DNA of the model is 100% preserved.

Kimera Automobili was born out of the Kimera Motorsport racing team, led by its founder Luca Betti, a former racer himself and now an experienced manager and entrepreneur.

The Kimera EVO37 is an example of an emerging trend in the luxury car segment that can be described as “rebuilding legends”.

In the future, this direction can completely replace restomoding, even in its most frugal version, because restomoding requires at least a donor body, which has to be cut and redone, that is, the classic model is in any case sacrificed to a new product — many automobile collectors consider this approach barbarism.

The original Lancia 037 in the road version of the Stradale was produced in a circulation of 207 copies and it is absolutely impossible to imagine that someone would «saw through» these rarities today. Kimera decided to simply redesign this model, taking into account modern technology and materials.

That is, the EVO37 is a remake, but in all major technical solutions it copies the historical prototype. The EVO37 brought in the old guard from Martini Racing (as the factory Lancia rally team was called in the 1980s), including its leader Claudio Lombardi and racer Miki Biazion, two-time world rally champion.

Suppliers, if possible, have kept the same ones that supplied components for the Lancia 037.

The Italian firm Kimera Automobili has unveiled the EVO37 coupe, which is a modern version of the legendary Lancia 037. The visually presented two-door in many ways repeats the aforementioned classic model.

In particular, it has the same retro front end design and a similar rear wing. Headlights and lanterns here have a familiar round shape, but the «filling» is already modern.

Interestingly, while the Lancia 037’s body panels are made of fiberglass, the Italians from Kimera Automobili used carbon fiber. The mass of the car is not advertised, but presumably it weighs in the region of 1,000 kg.

The photo shows that the car was presented in Lanci’s corporate red color, however, the developers noted that customers will be offered several different shades to choose from.

The Kimera EVO37 is driven by a 2.1-liter four-cylinder engine, which the mentioned Lancia 037 also relied on. However, on the modern model it is seriously modernized, and the famous engineer Claudio Lombardi took part in the process of finalizing the engine.

The motor received both a supercharger and a turbine (as on the Lancia Delta S4). As a result, the output of the unit exceeds 500 hp. and 550 Nm.

The engine works with a manual gearbox that transmits traction to the rear axle. The Italians do not talk about the dynamic characteristics of the car, but it promises to be very fast.

The chassis of the sports car has again been modernized: components from Ohlins are involved here, as well as Brembo brakes. Plus, the car received unique 18- and 19-inch wheels at the front and rear, respectively. In total, the Italians plan to release 37 copies of the Kimera EVO37 sports car.

Each of them will cost 480,000 euros (43.1 million rubles at the current exchange rate). The car will be shown live to the public at the upcoming Goodwood Festival of Speed ​​2021, with deliveries of the first cars to customers starting in September.

The Kimera EVO37 is slightly larger than the Lancia 037: the wheelbase has increased from 2445 to 2520 mm, the length — from 3915 to 4055 mm, but the body proportions are the same as in the classic model, and the design is essentially the same.

The body is based on a spatial roll bar made of steel, while the outer panels are made of carbon fiber. The previous and the suspension scheme: double wishbones «in a circle», at the rear — double shock absorbers (supplier — Öhlins).

The diameter of the brake discs is 365 mm at the front and rear, the calipers are 4-piston, carbon-ceramic brakes are available as an option. Tire size front — 245/35 R 18, rear — 295/30 R 19.

There are no photos of the interior yet, but the developers claim that everything in it is about the same as in the Lancia 037, only the finishing materials are modern: carbon fiber and Alcantara. The devices are completely analog, there are no newfangled «TVs».

The 4-cylinder gasoline engine from Italtecnica is a kind of hybrid of the Lancia 037 and Lancia Delta S4 engines: from the first it got a cylinder block with a working volume of 2150 «cubes», from the second — double pressurization: a turbocharger plus a mechanical supercharger of the Roots type, softening the effect of the turbo lag.

Maximum output — 505 hp. and 550 Nm, which is more than even the rally Lancia 037, which had up to 330 hp, and the road Stradale was content with 208 hp.

Transmission — 6-speed manual, driving wheels — rear. The dynamic characteristics have not yet been announced.

As a reminder, the original Lancia 037 was the last rear-wheel drive car to win the World Rally Championship Constructors’ Cup in 1983, after which all-wheel drive vehicles, including the aforementioned Lancia Delta S4, began to dominate the rally.

Live Kimera EVO37 will be shown to the public in July at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Production will begin in September.
