The road-going KTM X-Bow GT-XR: a lightweight supercar for every day with a large gas tank.

The Austrian company KTM has officially introduced a new road car X-Bow GT-XR, it is equipped with a 500 hp Audi 2.5 TFSI engine, can accelerate to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and costs from 284,900 euros.

KTM Sportmotorcycle GmbH is known primarily for its motorcycles, but in 2008 it introduced a lightweight medium-engine sports car X-Bow, which eventually became a whole family of models with road and track modifications.

In 2020, the largest and most powerful model in the X-Bow family with a closed body and a noticeably increased wheelbase, but until recently it was offered only in track versions GT2 and GTX, but now the road version GT-XR is presented.

The X-Bow GT-XR is based on the same carbon fiber monocoque as the track versions, but there is no tubular frame on top — it is assumed that the rising aircraft-type lantern (it integrates the windshield and swing-out side windows) will provide enough stiffness in case of a rollover.

Almost all exterior body panels are made of carbon fiber, aerodynamic front end is optimized for use on public roads.

Dry weight of the truck is 1130 kg, curb weight is 1250 kg and gross weight is 1600 kg. Weight distribution — 44:56 in favor of the rear axle.

Overall length — 4626 mm, width — 2041 mm, height — 1164 mm, wheelbase — 2850 mm.

Bought from Audi, the petrol 5-cylinder turbo engine 2.5 TFSI on the road supercar has relatively moderate boost: boost pressure — 1,55 bar, maximum power — 500 hp at 6350 rpm, maximum torque — 581 Nm at 5500 rpm.

Transmission — DSG DQ500, that is all-Volkswagen «automatic» type DCT (with two clutches).

All power is transferred to the rear wheels through a self-locking differential. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 3.4 seconds, from 100 to 200 km/h — 6.9 seconds, the top speed — 280 km/h.

Suspension is spring with Sachs shock absorbers, on double wishbones «in a circle» (in front — pushrod type).

The steering mechanism is equipped with electric booster with progressive characteristic.

Base brakes are steel, with 8-piston calipers (365 mm diameter) in front and 4-piston calipers (356 mm diameter) in the rear.

As an option carbon ceramic brakes are offered, in which case diameter of front discs increases to 380 mm and they are completed with 6-piston calipers.

Ground clearance is only 90 mm, a hydraulic elevator is available to overcome speed bumps and other large irregularities.

The ugplastic two-seat cockpit has a removable multifunction steering wheel with an integrated dashboard.

Landing over the high threshold will require good fitness. Cameras are responsible for all-around visibility by default, but regular mirrors are also available.

There’s air conditioning, USB-C ports and Bluetooth audio, but no multimedia system — you’ll have to use your own smartphone as a navigator.

However, KTM claims the GT-XR will be a comfortable enough ride for every day: there is a 160-litre trunk and an 8-litre glove compartment for personal items, and a 96-litre fuel tank will allow you to go up to 1000 km on a single load. The turning circle diameter is 13 m.

The price of 284,900 euros may seem exorbitant, for this money you can find a lot of alternatives, but KTM emphasizes rarity — the company manufactures not more than a hundred cars of the X-Bow family a year, so those who want to buy GT-XR for their collection may have to wait in line.
