Based on the Ford Explorer platform and assembled in Michigan, the Lincoln Aviator is trying, as we say, to create problems for some luxury hybrid SUVs. But when you hear “on the platform,” you probably think that Lincoln added some premium parts to the Explorer, called it Aviator, and thus transferred it to the luxury segment. No it is not!

Of course, «Aviator» is not lacking in luxury, and he does not lack individuality. First of all, due to the monstrous electric V6, which provides 494 hp. and 853 Nm of torque. But that’s not all. And if you look closely, the Aviator hybrid is filled with all sorts of subtle accents and unique features. However, this is a tough market and not easy to beat. Especially if your price is higher than the price of a very successful and quite successful Volvo XC90 Hybrid.

When you grapple with such sophisticated rivals as Volvo and BMW, first of all, in order to somehow stand out, you try to surpass them in design. Lincoln did not take this path and its SUV ideally combines elegance and creativity.

The Aviator has a number of unique styling cues such as a blue emblem that hints at its electric nature and a 3D chrome grille framed by full-size LED headlights. By the way, adaptive pixel LED light is available as standard, along with dynamic Lincoln signature lighting.

At the rear, the LED taillights are connected by an LED strip, and underneath are four exhaust tip holes. If we talk about the stern, then the contactless opening of the tailgate is also included in the standard package. «Aviator» rolls off the assembly line on 20-inch wheels, and 22 are available as an option.

The Lincoln is larger than the Volvo XC90 and has an overall length of 5.07 m, which is 7 cm longer than the XC90. Its width is 2.3 m, including mirrors, and its height is 1.78 meters.

«Aviator» is really a fitting name for a crossover, because its power is reminiscent of a jet plane, which may not take off into the sky, but will give a lot of vivid emotions on earth. The Grand Touring is equipped with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, paired with a powerful electric motor and a 13.6 kWh battery. Their combined efforts provide a monstrous 494 hp. and 853 Nm of torque, leaving the Volvo XC90 (400 hp and 640 Nm) far behind.

In independent tests, the Lincoln Hybrid accelerated to a hundred in about five seconds, three-tenths faster than its Swedish counterpart. The power plant is connected to a ten-speed automatic transmission, with the ability to control using paddle shifters.

In everyday life, it is almost impossible to beat Swedish economy. «Aviator» was no exception. However, Volvo wins only on gasoline. In electric mode, the Aviator Hybrid delivers a combined MPGe (mpg of fuel) of 90km, slightly better than the XC90’s 88km MPGe.

At the same time, Lincoln will allow about 735 km to go on a full tank, and Volvo will increase the flight range to 830 km. The charging station of the second level will be able to charge the Aviator in about three to four hours, and a home socket in 12.

Salon and multimedia

The Aviator’s large body gives it additional interior volume, allowing it to surpass the Volvo in all dimensions, except for legroom in the third row, if that’s the case. Heated front seats are 12-way adjustable and include powerful lumbar support.

There is an optional 30-position adjustment, but we cannot recommend it — to find a comfortable position you will need at least three months, and the word “comfortable” in this case is rather arbitrary. Heating and ventilation is available for both front and rear passengers.

The Aviator’s trunk resembles a primeval cave and offers 520 liters of space for luggage and golf clubs with the seats up, and 2,200 liters with the seats folded down, which can be used to carry quite large items.

The infotainment system is simple and accessible. It is based on a 10.1-inch touchscreen and Ford’s Sync 3 system, which supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM, HD radio and Bluetooth streaming. Revel speakers with 14 speakers are standard, and the optional Revel Ultima with 28 speakers (standard on the Black Label version) is available.

However, it is no match for the optionally available Bowers and Wilkins XC90, so we recommend sticking to the standard acoustic set and saving your money. In addition, four USB ports and a Wi-Fi hotspot are included as standard.

So the Lincoln Aviator is a worthy competitor to Volvo and Lexus. It costs, of course, a lot, but it also offers enough. The Aviator’s cabin is well laid out and made of high quality materials, plenty of space for passengers and a larger trunk. The only thing it lacks is economy. Otherwise, Aviator is an excellent choice for those who appreciate powerful luxury SUVs. In general, this is not a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado.

Price

The first model in the hybrid Grand Touring lineup costs 69,000 dollars (about 5 million rubles). It’s more expensive than the base Volvo XC90. The transition to a more exclusive Black Label will cost $ 87,800 (almost 6.5 million rubles), and both of these prices are relevant for America. In Russia they will multiply.

At the same time, we do not believe that the Black Label package is worth that much money and recommend sticking to the basic levels. We would also choose diamond blue for the body and slate gray leather for the interior. Additional packages only make sense if you are not constrained in funds.

Then you can swing at the Grand Touring I, which will add ventilated front and rear seats, heated third row and a whole package of amenities. But it will also cost $ 77,000 (5.7 million rubles). In America.
