The Mercedes-SL AMG 2022 roadster debuted in SL 55 and SL 63 versions.

At the end of October twenty-first Germans have presented the roadster Mercedes-AMG SL 2022 in the new R232 body.

From the name of the model it is not difficult to guess that it was developed by specialists of AMG-division.

It is known that the car was created from scratch and has nothing in common with its predecessor. And in the process of development a bet was made on «return to the roots».

In particular, with the change of generation the two-door received a soft folding top, which was last used on R129 produced from 1989 to 2001.

Giving up the hard top allowed not only to reduce the center of gravity, but also to lose 21 kg of weight. You can raise or fold the roof in 15 seconds at speeds up to 60 km/h.

The drag coefficient here is 0.31, which is not outstanding.

Nevertheless, AMG specialists are proud of the car’s aerodynamics, saying they managed to achieve an accurate balance between lift and downforce.

To achieve the result they installed a carbon fiber «lip» under the front bumper of the car.

At speeds above 80km/h, it extends downward by 40mm, thus creating a vortex of air under the bottom. This reduces the lift on the front axle.

A sophisticated Airpanel louver system was used in the radiator grille. Its lower part (behind the bumper) comes with vertical baffles, which open automatically when needed.

But in the upper part (just behind the grille) the horizontal slats are used: they are opened only at speeds over 180 km/h.

Other features of the new Mercedes-AMG SL 2022 include the presence of matrix headlights Digital Light.

The last ones are already in the base model of the car and can «draw» tips right on the road.

Thus, the length of the car grew to 4,704 mm (+64) and its wheelbase grew to 2,700 mm (+115). It is reported that curb weight of the base model is 1,875 kg, although at one time the SL was abbreviation of «Super Light».

While Germans have presented two versions of the model, which are equipped with well-known 4.0-liter gasoline V8 with two turbines.

The latter has been seriously modified, getting a modified sump, new intercoolers and a different crankcase ventilation system.

Specifically on the Mercedes-AMG SL 55 variant, this engine produces 476 hp (700 Nm). (700 Nm) and in the top version SL 63 — 585 hp (800 Nm).

Curiously, these two versions of the model differ from each other only by the maximum boost pressure and the firmware.

Fifty-fifth» is able to accelerate from a place up to a hundred for 3.9 seconds, developing a top speed up to 295 km/h.

In both cases, the engine works in tandem with a nine-speed automatic AMG Speedshift MCT 9G, with the main feature of the presented model is the appearance of a full drive (for the first time in the history of SL).

We are talking about a transmission 4Matic +, in which a multi-disc clutch is responsible for connecting the front axle.

For an additional fee for the SL 55, you can order electronically controlled differential lock, although the SL 63 has it in the base.

In the future, the roadster will receive basic versions with turbo four, as well as powerful hybrids with AMG E Performance installation.

The chassis of the presented model is completely new, with double wishbones on both axles.

At the same time for the «fifty-fifth» is declared a spring suspension with adaptive shock absorbers and standard stabilizers.

In turn, the «sixty-third» has a more advanced chassis AMG Active Ride Control, which uses a hydraulic system instead of stabilizers, connecting the racks of the left and right sides.

At the same time the model already in the base is fully steerable: electric actuators are used to turn the rear wheels by a small angle.

At speeds up to 100 km/h the rear wheels are tilted in the opposite direction to the front, which improves maneuverability.

At speeds above 100 km/h, all wheels turn in the same direction. This enhances stability.

The roadster is fitted with six-piston brakes as standard on the front axle and single-piston brakes on the rear. The discs are compound.

The more efficient carbon-ceramic mechanisms can be ordered for an extra charge.

The new Mercedes-AMG SL 2022 cabriolet will be built at the Bremen plant in Germany.

In the showrooms of European dealers the first cars should appear at the beginning of the twenty-second year, but there is no information about prices yet.

According to rumors, the car will cost from 140,000 euros (11.5 million rubles at current exchange rates).
