The Perodua Ativa crossover will usher in a new era for the company.
Perodua has been operating since 1992 and is now the largest car manufacturer in Malaysia.

Perodua is 25% owned by the Japanese company Daihatsu, so its cars are variations on the models of this brand.

Five years ago, the Malaysian company matured to self-engineering and introduced the Perodua Bezza sedan, which has no analogue in the Daihatsu range.

However, the new Perodua Ativa crossover turned out to be a clone again: the original Daihatsu Rocky and Toyota Raize models debuted back in 2019. And yet for the company, this SUV is very important in another respect.

This is the first Perodua model on the modular DNGA platform (a type of TNGA for compact cars), as well as the first one with a turbo engine and a CVT (previously the company used only aspirated and four-speed automatic transmissions).

And at the same time, at the start of production, Ativa is 95% localized! In Malaysia, production is organized not only for most of the components, but also for engines and transmissions.

Subsequently, they will be installed on other Perodua models, as well as supplied to the Indonesian Daihatsu plant.

It is such an extensive localization that is due to the one and a half year delay in the debut of the crossover relative to the Japanese twins.

However, it is stated that the Malaysian side participated in the development of the machine from the very beginning and brought some of its own solutions to the project. And, allegedly, therefore, Perodua Ativa has a minimum of differences from twins under the Daihatsu and Toyota brands.

Among them is a different radiator grille and a different bumper design, thanks to which the length has grown by 70 mm (up to 4065 mm).

Installed other, more graceful rear-view mirrors. The adapted suspension (McPherson at the front and semi-dependent at the rear) led to an increase in ground clearance and overall height by 15 mm — up to 200 mm and 1635 mm, respectively.

The most obvious difference in the cabin is a different climate control unit with buttons instead of handles.

Unlike its Japanese counterparts, Ativa is devoid of climate control (only a conventional air conditioner), but there is a memory for two operating modes.

The trunk holds 303 liters of luggage, but if you take into account the underground, the volume will be 369 liters.

The base Ativa has six airbags, ESP, an automatic braking system, a simple radio, an engine start button and reflective LED headlights.

The more expensive versions have virtual instruments on a seven-inch screen, a media system, a rear-view camera and adaptive cruise control.

At the same time, the Malaysian crossover is devoid of all-round cameras and a car park that the «Japanese» have.

And the Perodua Ativa lacks all-wheel drive, although Toyota Raize and Daihatsu Rocky may have such a drivetrain.

In Malaysia, buyers of such cars still do not want to pay extra for the 4×4 version. But the power unit for all triplets is the same.

It is a 1.0 (98 hp) petrol turbo set with a D-CVT, which combines a torque converter, a V-belt mechanism and one planetary gear.

The car starts and accelerates in a stepless mode, and at speeds over 60 km / h (the exact value depends on driving conditions), the electronics switches to a «mechanical» overdrive, reducing fuel consumption.
In Malaysia, Produa Ativa is already available to order.

Prices — from 15 thousand dollars.
