The 2023 Peugeot 4008 will debut as a spy coupe based on the 308.

Photo spies have caught what could be the next Peugeot crossover model based on the 308, rumored to be the 4008.

This is the first time we’ve seen a 308-based model on public roads, signaling Peugeot’s entry into the popular coupe-crossover segment.

The new model could bridge the gap between the 308 compact hatchback and the 3008 C-SUV, offering more interior space than the former and a more aggressive design than the latter.

The prototype looks quite attractive with slim LED headlights, pronounced shoulders and a sloping roof line toward the rear.

It also has more ground clearance, which hints at crossover styling.

This alleged rendering of a future Peugeot coupe crossover, created by independent designer Jean François Hubert/SB-Medien for CarScoops, looks like a camouflaged prototype spotted by photographers.

In addition to the camouflaged prototype in production body, spies caught a test version of the same model at tests in northern Sweden.

This one had a modified body of the previous generation Peugeot 308 SW but with a longer wheelbase.

The model will be based on the EMP2 platform, like the Peugeot 308, DS 4 and Opel Astra.

This makes it compatible with plug-in hybrid powertrains, which are quickly becoming the norm for any future new model in Europe.

In the current lineup, the Stellantis PHEVs develop a total of 177 hp and 222 hp and 355 hp in the all-wheel-drive dual-electric variant.

In either case, the internal combustion engine is a 1.6-liter turbocharged PureTech four-cylinder gasoline engine in various tuning states.

At this point, we can’t be sure of the nameplate Peugeot is going to use for its first crossover coupe.

But since it’s a crossover, the 4008 name sounds like the most reliable option.

While some French media are calling it a competitor to the Renault Arkana, Peugeot’s premium twist over the past few years suggests that the model could compete with the more expensive Audi Q3 Sportback, BMW X2 and Mazda CX-30 in the premium market segment.

A production version of Peugeot’s first coupe crossover is expected to debut in late 2022 or spring 2023, with a market launch in Europe shortly thereafter.
