The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS 2022 is set to make its debut in November as the most extreme variant in the Porsche family of sports cars.

This is the first mid-engine Porsche with the prefix RS, and the main differences from the existing model Cayman GT4 will be increased power, reduced weight and developed aerodynamic kit (for the sake of increasing downforce).

Recall that the original coupe Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 has a six-cylinder 4.0 liter atmospheric engine (420 hp), and originally it was aggregated only with manual gearbox, but later appeared and «robot» PDK.

Porsche has not yet published the characteristics of the RS-version, but it will definitely have a robotized gearbox and seriously boosted engine (possibly up to 500 horsepower).

But we already know what the upcoming Cayman GT4 RS is capable of: the results of the race at the Nürburgring have been published.

Almost a production car was used for the test lap. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires will be offered as a proprietary option, and the only non-standard refinement — racing seats, which did not affect the weight of the sports car.

Factory tester Jörg Bergmeister completed the 20.832 km lap in 7 minutes and 9.300 seconds. The «old» 20.6 km short lap time was 7 minutes and 4.511 seconds, 23.6 seconds less than the base Cayman GT4 model.

If we evaluate this time in absolute terms, almost the same result on the 20.6 km circuit three years ago was shown by the much more powerful front-engined Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro (585 hp).

And the Nürburgring record is now held by the Porsche 911 GT2 RS with the result of the «old» lap of 6 minutes 38.84 seconds.

The first RS variant in the 718 series, the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS sports car, passed the Nürburgring’s North Loop in 7:09.3 on the 20.832km cut-off and in 7:04.511 on the 20.6km course during the final tests.

The latter value is 23.6 seconds less than the original 2019 Cayman GT4.

And compared to the last generation (Porsche Cayman GT4 series 981, 2015) the difference is even more impressive — 37.879 s.

The Cayman GT4 uses a 4.0 atmospheric six (420 hp, 420 N-m) and a six-speed manual.

In the RS version we can expect a boosted engine (500 hp or higher), a reconfigured chassis and increased downforce.

But the most important thing is that the most extreme road-going Cayman got the PDK «robot», as evidenced by the onboard.

«The 718 Cayman GT4 RS is an uncompromising race car. On mountain roads, it behaves as maneuverable as a go-kart, while also boasting excellent directional stability on the racetrack.

Otherwise, it wouldn’t be possible to set such a lap time,» said Bergmeister, who spent more than 500 hours testing the model.

The demonstration of the minimally camouflaged car suggests that the premiere is near. The company did not give a date, but indicated the month of November.

The run put the Cayman GT4 RS in fifteenth place among the fastest road models at the Nürburgring.

For example, the newcomer is 0.12 seconds faster than the 585-horsepower Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro.

At the wheel of the Cayman GT4 RS was test driver and Porsche brand ambassador Jörg Bergmeister.

Optional Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tires and a racing seat (for better protection) were used.

The mass and serial equipment of the coupe were certified by a notary.

At the front, the RS version is given off by air intakes on the hood-air intakes in place of the rear side windows-and a larger, inverted antifender on the stern.
