Subaru Solterra 2022: Japanese brand’s first electric crossover.

The Toyota-Subaru partnership continues to bring technical twins to the automotive world: following the GR86 / BRZ sports coupe pair, electric compact crossovers will soon enter the market — the first models for a new joint electric platform and the first full-fledged green cars for both Japanese brands.

The Toyota brand will be represented by the bZ4X SUV, the pre-production version of which the company showed last April.

But Subaru chose a more euphonious name for their electric car, composing it from Latin words meaning «sun» (sol) and «earth» (terra) — Subaru Solterra of 2022.

The electric bogie for the 2022 Subaru Solterra and a large number of subsequent models was designed jointly by the company, immediately putting in it a great variety of configuration: it allows the installation of several engines, on any of the axles, therefore, theoretically, it allows you to make cars with any type of drive.

Its feature is also a fully electric steering mechanism, which in theory allows you to adjust any gear ratios of the «steering column», plus the developers declare the presence of solar panels in the models, which will recharge the traction battery.

Externally, the Subaru Solterra 2022 model year completely copies the body of the Toyota bZ4X SUV, with the exception of the front end, where its own branded radiator grille and original optics should appear.

The interior of the car has not yet been presented, but if you look at the already published images of the interior of the pre-production bZ4X, then in Salterra you should expect the appearance of a steering wheel in the form of a steering wheel, a huge central display of the multimedia system and an unusual add-on with a small dashboard.

The manufacturer also promises a high level of comfort inside the car, a flat floor and a lot of free space for rear passengers, although in general the new electric car remains a compact car in the Subaru Forester format.

Specifications and filling

Technical details about the new product are still kept secret, which can be explained by the manufacturer’s lack of a clear understanding of which modifications will enter the market.

The Japanese only said that their new platform was designed in such a way that it was possible to build vehicles of different lengths on it, mount different drive circuits and install batteries of different sizes.

It is quite possible that closer to the time of the official debut, Subaru / Toyota will decide which configurations to give preference, while not forgetting to look back at the closest competitors.

Subaru Salterra: prices and terms of appearance in Russia?

Subaru Solterra and Toyota bZ4X are slated for release in mid-2022.

Both models will go on sale at the same time, «dividing» the markets in advance, and the first deliveries of machines will immediately cover the United States, Europe and China.

Perhaps one of the «twins» will be offered to Russian dealers, but this will clearly be preceded by a study of the potential demand and economic feasibility of selling such «electric trains» in Russia.
