The updated 2024 Tesla Model 3 electric car will get a more simplified interior.
Tesla is preparing to update the Model 3 sedan to make it more appealing to customers and lower production costs.
The upgraded Tesla model will be codenamed Highland.
The mid-cycle update will be similar to the one the Model S and X received in 2021.
Visual changes to the Model 3’s exterior and interior are expected, Reuters reports.
No specific changes to the exterior design have been indicated. But using the Model S as a benchmark, Tesla may just refine the body and leave minor updates.
With new «gigapresses» and other lean assembly methods, the redesigned exterior should be simpler and therefore cheaper for the company.
Tesla will focus on further simplifying the Model 3’s already minimalist interior to keep costs down again.
However, the focus will be on improving what drivers use most often, such as the infotainment screen.
The update also comes as the market for electric cars in China, Tesla’s second-largest market after the U.S., has become much more challenging.
The automaker has recently been forced to take a 9% price cut on the Model 3 in order to become more competitive in the market against other electric car manufacturers.
This price reduction was due to a drop in sales. In the first 10 months of 2022, the Model 3 in China was chosen by 9% fewer buyers than a year earlier.
Meanwhile, manufacturers such as BYD have surpassed Model 3 sales of electric cars such as Qin and Han. Finding a way to cut costs has become increasingly important for Tesla.
The updated Model 3 is expected to go into production in the third quarter of 2023 at Tesla’s Shanghai plant.
It will also be produced at the automaker’s plant in Fremont, California, though production dates there are unknown.
