Toyota AYGO X prologue 2021.

Toyota’s mysterious concept is a harbinger of a new Aygo: a SUV instead of a hatch.

The new A-class model will be akin to the latest Yaris, while, in order to keep the price affordable, the compact will not have hybrid versions. The novelty will probably hit the market at the end of this — early next year.

A week ago, Toyota circulated a teaser for the X prologue concept. It was assumed that the company is preparing for the premiere of the harbinger of the firstborn of the long-awaited electric family.

But no, the full name of the prototype is Toyota Aygo X prologue, that is, we have a prototype of the heir to the small hatchback Aygo.

Recall that the current sitikar was created in cooperation with the PSA concern, it has brothers — Citroen C1 and Peugeot 108. However, the next compact Toyota is developing independently, because the «French» will not have successors.

Design studio ED2, located near Nice, was responsible for the look of Aygo X prologue. In its release, the company emphasizes that the model is made especially for Europeans.

Crossovers are not mentioned, but, apparently, the designers tried to bring the next Aygo closer to the SUV segment: the show car has massive wheel arches and large wheels, and there are roof rails on the concave roof.

Other exterior features include horseshoe optics, action cameras in the outside mirrors and a bike rack integrated into the rear bumper.

Well, the all-glass tailgate and the upward-facing lights are a nod to the current hatch.

Disguised test prototypes of the next Aygo have already come across to photo spies. So the body of the serial compact will be almost the same as that of the show car.

But optics will be simplified — «squiggles» will be removed.

The new Aygo will be based on the GA-B platform created within the TNGA architecture. The same «cart» is at the heart of the latest generation Toyota Yaris hatchback and Yaris Cross SUV.

At the same time, earlier Toyota officially announced that Aygo will be offered only with internal combustion engines — without any hybrid appendages.

The company decided to take such a step in order to maintain an attractive price for Europeans. Most likely, like the current hatch, the novelty will be available with a three-cylinder «aspirated» 1.0 (72 hp). Four-wheel drive is unlikely to be provided.

Meanwhile, the current compact Toyota in Europe ended the last year in the red: according to CarSalesBase, 82,711 copies were sold, which is 17% less than in 2019.

And still, the «Japanese» is much more popular and related Peugeot 108 (43 629 units, -19%) and Citroen C1 (40 578 units, -19%), and Kia Picanto (49 211 units, -38%).

The commercial new Aygo will probably premiere this year. The «five-door» should enter the European market in late 2021 — early 2022. In Russia, Toyota’s sitikar is not represented, we also have practically no chances of getting a successor.

Toyota has unveiled the cross-concept Aygo X prologue.

The design of the conceptual cross-hatchback Toyota Aygo X prologue, which will serve as the prototype for the third generation of the European city car Aygo, is the result of the work of the French design bureau ED2.

The current Toyota Aygo with an X-shaped front mask that resembles the face of an awake kid will be a thing of the past.

The French have tried to give the concept more personality in order to demonstrate that the compact car can still be solid and bold in terms of design.

A crossover look with extended wheel arches, roof rails and large wheels is responsible for the solidity and readiness to turn off the asphalt, and for the style — body plastic supplemented with intricate LED lighting technology and contrasting colors with a black-painted stern, almost like Smart.

As additional equipment, there are action cameras integrated into the exterior mirror housings that work as a video recorder and a bicycle mount hidden under a patch on the rear bumper.

No photos of the interior yet, no technical details. At the heart of the sitikar, a platform is expected from the new Toyota Yaris hatchback, the entire European range of power plants, including the base gasoline aspirated, will be from it.

The commercial version of the new Toyota Aygo will appear in the fall.
