The current generation of the Toyota Corolla model has been produced since 2018, so the Japanese decision to update the car with a restyling by 2022 seems quite logical.
The manufacturer has already published renders that show the scale of the upcoming changes, but the main news, as expected, will not be related to the appearance of the updated car.
First of all, the brand’s fans are waiting for Toyota to present its «charged» variant of Corolla GR 2022, which can compete with sport hatchbacks Honda Civic Type R and Renault Megane RS Trophy.
Everything goes to the fact that the car with the most powerful three-cylinder engine in the world will see the light, as it happened at the beginning of 2020 with another model of the Japanese brand — Toyota Yaris GR, which received 260 hp and 360 Nm unit.

The manufacturer has long accustomed the automotive world to its conservative approach in terms of any modifications to the exterior and interior, but this time the planned small changes will seriously transform the look of the popular model.

Body
Designers developed for the new Toyota Corolla 2022 model year an original drawing of headlights, connecting C-shaped lamps with a strip.
As a result, the car has actually lost the radiator grille, and now its role is given to a big central air intake in the front bumper.
Something similar with lighting equipment was made on the stern, increasing the rear bumper.
Other body parts remained untouched, making the restyling program quite economical, but extremely effective in terms of exterior updates.
Interior

The new Corolla should retain the current engine lineup, which includes the following gasoline engines for cars of Russian specification:

1ZR-FE — 1.6 liter (122 hp or 90 kW);
2ZR-FE — 1.8 liter (140 hp or 103 kW).
All units have the same architecture, including a camshaft in the head, four valves per cylinder and the original timing control system (Dual VVT-i).
The least powerful motor uses a «box» 6-MCP, 1.6-liter — «manual» or Multidrive S variator, and the most powerful — only a variator.
By the way, Corollas with hybrid engines are in the highest demand in other export markets.
The «supercharged» GR modification
According to preliminary data, the Toyota Corolla GR will have 300 horsepower, which will put it among the leaders in its segment in terms of power.
For this purpose, the same 1.6-liter power unit that is put in the Yaris GR will be used, but it will have at least 40 horsepower due to the bigger and more massive body of the Corolla.
Thus the car will be equipped with all-wheel drive chassis, 6-speed manual transmission and differentials for each wheel axle.
Special suspension settings and steering, and the body of such a car will receive a special aerodynamic dodger.
Toyota Corolla: when will it be released in Russia?
Toyota Corolla 2022 model year will be globally presented closer to the winter, and a few months later, Russian dealers will announce their plans to update the line of modifications.
