A completely different «Crown»: the new Toyota Crown is shown in patent images.

Japanese media have published patent images of sixteenth-generation Toyota Crown.

The model breaks up with its conservative role and turns into a fashionable cross-family that was created with an eye on the global market.

The current «fifteenth» Toyota Crown debuted in 2017, and at Japanese dealers appeared in 2018 and is offered exclusively in the body of a four-door sedan with a rather conservative design.

In previous generations, the Toyota Crown also existed in coupe, station wagon, and even pickup bodies, but this is all a thing of the past, since the twelfth generation Crown is only a sedan, focused primarily on the home market.

Demand for the Toyota Crown has been declining in recent years (last year it sold 21,000 units in Japan, while in 1990 the Crown sold over 200,000 units), and the model could eventually quietly disappear from the range, but the Japanese company’s management decided to give it a new, much more versatile life.

In spring last year in China debuted new Crowns — Crown Kluger (reincarnated crossover Toyota Highlander) and Crown Vellfire (a variation on the theme of minivan Toyota Alphard), and for the global market is preparing a full-fledged sixteenth generation.

The patent images that surfaced in the network this week show a cross-sedan, or rather cross-fastback (sedan with a sloping back without a clearly defined third volume, but with a separated from the cabin luggage compartment).

The Japanese magazine Bestcarweb reports that the new Crown will have a length of less than 5 meters and offered with rear or all-wheel drive, and power plants will be hybrid — based on a 2.5-liter gasoline «atmospheric» and 2.4-liter gasoline turbo.

In addition to the sedan in the range allegedly will be a full crossover and crossover station wagon, but Bestcarweb has not yet established itself as a reliable source — there were many mistakes in its forecasts and insides.

In turn, much more reliable in terms of rumors Reuters in April reported that the crossover Crown will have both socket (PHEV) and socketless (HEV) hybrid modifications — they should enter the market in the summer of 2023, and in 2024 the new Crown will be offered with a pure electric powertrain.

The main markets for the new Toyota Crown will be China, the U.S. and Japan. Russia may have been in the plans, but after the events that began on February 24 it is no longer important — now the new Toyota Crown is only of speculative interest to us.
