Toyota GR Supra: the Japanese have revived the legendary model.
The Japanese chose the Detroit Auto Show two thousand nineteen as the location for the long-awaited premiere of the Toyota GR Supra sports coupe, a prototype of which was shown five years ago.

All this time, the company was preparing for the revival of the legendary model, for which the current version in the back of the A90 became the fifth generation.

It is noteworthy that the new Toyota Supra 2021 from the very beginning was created jointly with BMW, and it was the Bavarians who were responsible for all the technical «stuffing», including the chassis and engines. It is all the more curious that Toyota never mention their partners anywhere in their press releases.

Thus, the Toyota GR Supra (GR is an abbreviation for the name of the Gazoo Racing motorsport division) turned out to be a blood relative with the third generation BMW Z4 (G29) roadster presented earlier.

But the Japanese sports car received a completely original body and a slightly rethought interior. Unlike the «plug», the new Supra has an exceptionally rigid roof, and the design of the model has something in common with the FT-1 concept, first shown back in two thousand and fourteen.

There is the same long bonnet and a rearward-shifted cabin, an elongated «nose» to which the outgrowths from the large head optics stretch, as well as massive air intakes in the front bumper.

In addition, the 2021 Toyota Supra in the new A90 body sports muscular fenders, two domed protrusions on the roof, side air ducts, a spoiler integrated into the trunk lid, narrow horizontal lights, a diffuser in the rear bumper with two round exhaust pipes on the sides, as well as a carbon aerodynamic plumage on the bottom.

The car is set on 19-inch wheels, «shod» in tires measuring 255/35 at the front and 275/35 at the rear, and the interior of the sports car is designed exclusively for two people.

Inside, the new Toyota Supra V model has its own dashboard with a wide horizontal section of air ducts and a free-standing multimedia system screen, as well as a redesigned center console.

At the same time, the steering wheel with paddles, the transmission selector, a row of buttons, and a washer for controlling multimedia functions are borrowed from the Z4.

The tidy here is digital (located on the 8.8-inch color display) with a large tachometer in the center and additional information on the sides of it, carbon fiber inserts are used in the trim.

The 2021 Toyota GR Supra is built on the same rear-wheel-drive chassis as the Z-Four roadster with McPherson struts front suspension and a multi-link rear.

At the base of the car are Brembo adaptive shock absorbers and brakes with four-piston calipers on the front axle.

The overall length of the coupe is 4,382 mm, the wheelbase is 2,470, the width and height have not yet been specified, but the Japanese emphasize the ideal ratio of the base and track (1.55).

Due to the absence of a folding roof mechanism, the Supra turned out to be somewhat lighter than the Bavarian roadster — the mass of the model is equal to 1,541 kg (- 69).

But if several power units were proposed for BMW, then for Toyota Supra it was decided to take only one, and the most powerful one, which is put on the modification of the M40i.

It is a 3.0-liter inline-six B58 with a twin-flow turbocharger that develops 340 hp. and 500 Nm of torque.

Traction is transmitted to the wheels of the rear axle through an 8-band automatic, providing the sports car with an acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.3 seconds (0.2 seconds faster than BMW), and the maximum speed is electronically limited to 250 km / h.

Plus, there is an active differential with increasing planetary gears, a «quick start» function and two operating modes of the control electronics («Normal» and «Sport»).

Later it turned out that for the Japanese market, it was decided to install «fours» on the Toyota Supra — the base is a 2.0-liter engine with 197 hp. and 320 Nm, and it is coupled with an option for 258 forces and 400 Nm.

The first variant with a mass of 1,410 kg and a passive suspension accelerates to a hundred in 6.5 seconds, and the second one has 18-inch discs (instead of 17 ″) and an adaptive suspension, while accelerating from 0 to 100 km / h takes 5.2 seconds with a mass of 1 450 kg.

In terms of safety, Toyota Supra is equipped with an automatic high-beam to low-beam switching system, a road sign recognition function, lane tracking, pedestrian detection, as well as frontal collision warning and automatic emergency braking.

How much is

The production of the novelty was set up at the Magna Steyr plant in Austria, and the start of sales of the new Toyota Supra came in the spring of 2019, the price in the States starts at $ 49,900. And this is a good offer, since the Z4 is only asking for a couple of hundred more, but it will be a car with a basic four-cylinder engine.

Toyota Supra appeared in Russia, orders were opened on June 3 (you can buy a car at one of 13 dealerships throughout the country), and deliveries are scheduled for the end of two thousand nineteen.

The quota for our market is only 22 cars, and three of them are in the A90 Edition 1 version (they were booked online and paid within just four hours from the start of sales).

It was decided to deliver to us only a coupe with a top-end 3.0-liter engine for 340 forces (4.3 seconds up to a hundred, maximum speed is not limited), the price of the model in the Passion configuration is 5,534,000 rubles, which is almost 700,000 rubles. more expensive than the BMW Z4 M40i with a similar engine, the cost of the special version is 5,692,000 rubles.

The standard equipment of the coupe includes diode head optics, dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, electric seat adjustment and memory, JBL audio system with 12 speakers, multimedia with an 8.8-inch screen and a rearview camera, engine start button, parking sensors, adaptive suspension, Brembo brakes with four-piston calipers at the front; and Toyota Safety Sense.

The Supra A90 Edition sports a special ‘Matt Storm Gray’ exterior paint, black rims and a red interior.

Note that the first 1,500 copies of the model for the United States are made in a special version of the Launch Edition (from $ 55,250) with a special decor, red mirror housings, a plate with a serial number and an autograph of Akio Toyoda, as well as the maximum possible equipment.
