In the near future, the Japanese automaker Toyota will present the second generation of the car with a hydrogen power plant Toyota Mirai 2022.

The first release of the model went on sale back in 2014. The patented TFCS (Toyota Fuel Cell System) unit with a capacity of 114 kW combines the main advantages of hydrogen fuel cells and a hybrid drive platform.

The expected novelty will be even more powerful, more autonomous and at the same time cheaper, as the company monitors the trend of cheaper vehicles operating on alternative energy sources.

Design and layout changes

When developing the new version of the Toyota Mirai 2022, Toyota’s designers were committed to making comprehensive improvements to enhance the vehicle’s appeal to consumers and make the car more manageable.

Compared to its predecessor, the dimensions of the model have been slightly increased. Now they make up:

• length — 4975 mm (added 85 mm);
• width — 1885 mm;
• wheelbase — 2920 mm (+140 mm).

The rims enlarged to 20 inches give the car exterior a special charm and elegance. They also give the impression of a low center of gravity.

For a long time, the Japanese automaker did not particularly reveal the technical characteristics of the upcoming novelty.

At the same time, insiders and official sources said that the new Toyota Mirai 2022 will use a slightly redesigned layout of the power unit and fuel cells.

The engine is located at the rear of the car, and the batteries are not located where they were in the previous generation (in the middle of the car between the passenger and driver’s seat). This is a justifiable measure that has allowed manufacturers to extend the model’s range and improve handling.

This explains the logical concept for a production car: the fuel cell battery in the front causes the car to “drive” on the road, so the engineers decided to install it in the back.

Specifications

The novelty is designed on the basis of the GA-L platform, which provides for a change in the arrangement of fuel cells and transmission units for the most efficient use of space. The result is a more spacious cab and improved chassis balancing.

Particular emphasis was placed on the range. Increased power, a larger hydrogen tank, improved aerodynamics and fuel efficiency all contribute to a range of up to 650 km.

The car is equipped with 3 high-pressure hydrogen fuel tanks, which increased autonomy by 30%.
The tanks have a T-shaped layout. The longest section is located longitudinally and centrally under the car’s flooring.

There is a compartment under the rear seats and the boot for the two smaller tanks. The total capacity of these tanks is 5.6 kg of hydrogen (the volume of the predecessor was 4.6 kg of hydrogen fuel).

A well thought out configuration and redesigned arrangement of the elements of the fuel system allowed for a lower center of gravity and preservation of cargo space.

The new platform also allows the innovative fuel cell to be moved from its current location to the front compartment, while the high-voltage battery and electric motor can be positioned under the rear axle.

According to the manufacturer, the drivetrain layout has been optimized to provide a 50:50 weight distribution between the front and rear of the vehicle.

Hydrogen tanks have a more robust multi-layer design and are characterized by reduced weight (hydrogen accounts for 6% of the total weight of the fuel and tanks).

The GA-L platform, specially designed for the Toyota Mirai 2022, provides the following benefits:

• lower center of gravity;
• improved inertial performance;
• increased body rigidity, which improves the dynamic margin.

By displacing the battery from under the floor into the front compartment and placing the battery and engine in the rear, the engineers have achieved a 50:50 weight balance front and rear for improved dynamic performance.

The new platform uses multi-link suspension elements rather than MacPherson struts (as in the previous version).

This configuration improves stability, handling and ride comfort. The suspension consists of more durable anti-roll bars.

Conclusion

Together with the presentation of the Toyota Mirai 2022, Toyota plans to confidently gain a foothold in the hydrogen car market and increase its sales figures by 10 times. This growth will be supported by improved model performance and a 20% price reduction.
