Toyota Tundra Capstone luxury pickup: lots of chrome, natural walnut, and hybrid traction.
The new, third generation of the full-size Toyota Tundra pickup has been updated with a top-of-the-line Capstone version with improved trim and a non-alternative hybrid powertrain based on a V6 gasoline bi-turbo engine.
Sales in the U.S. will start this spring.
At the end of 2021, Toyota became the most successful car brand in the U.S. and sold 2,027,786 vehicles, 10.3% more than in 2020 (here and below the manufacturers’ data).
Ford was second (1,804,824 cars sold, -6.5%), and Chevrolet was third (1,422,031 cars sold, -18%).
But in the segment of full-size pickups, Toyota is still far behind the leaders: last year its Tundra pickup was sold in 81,959 units (-24.9%, while the number of pickup trucks sold in the US market is slightly below the USA average. (-24,9%), and Ford F-Series sold 726,004 pcs. (-7.8%), Ram Pickup — 569,388 pcs. (+1%), Chevrolet Silverado — 529,765 pcs. (-10,8%).
Last year, the third generation Tundra debuted, which Toyota has high hopes for.
It premiered in September, and in October, a luxury version of the Capstone (translates as «top» or «culmination») was announced, which is intended to compete with the most richly equipped versions of Ford F-150, Ram 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado, as well as GMC Sierra Denali (essentially, the premium version of the Chevrolet Silverado).
The Capstone version will be offered exclusively with a full-size hydro-mounted CrewMax cab (there is also a shortened Double Cab), and hybrid powertrain i-Force Max: between the 3.4-liter gasoline twin-turbo V6 (394 hp, 650 Nm) and 10-speed hydromechanical «automatic» is installed 36-kilowatt electric motor, and a backup battery is under the rear sofa.
Maximum combined output of the power plant is 443 hp and 790 Nm. The Capstone version has a payload of 674 kg and a towed trailer weight of 4690 kg.
The exterior features of the Tundra Capstone include a grille with a unique mesh pattern and chrome horizontal bars, chrome-plated 22-inch alloy wheels, chrome mirror caps, large chrome Tundra lettering on the tailgate, chrome i-Force Max lettering on the hood, power steps to get into the cab and bodywork.
The interior features two-tone upholstery in semi-aniline perforated leather, dark American walnut trim on the front panel and center tunnel, contoured diode lighting and luminous Capstone lettering.
The front doors have special acoustic glass that reduces the noise level in the cabin.
The standard equipment of Capstone version includes top multimedia system with 14-inch touchscreen, 12-speaker JBL audio system, 12-inch digital dashboard, 10-inch projection display, digital rearview mirror, panoramic sunroof and Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 electronic driver assistance system with adaptive cruise control.
An optional adaptive suspension and rear self-levelling axle on air struts are available.
Prices of Toyota Tundra Capstone have not been announced yet, but American media believe that it is necessary to be oriented to 70 thousand dollars without taking into account options.
