Volkswagen is thinking about an SUV based on the current Amarok pickup.

According to preliminary information, we are talking about an electric SUV, which can be called ID. Ruggzz.

Volkswagen has been producing the Amarok pickup truck since 2010, the second generation model appeared relatively recently — in July 2022.

By the way, initially the company assumed that the truck would not have a successor, but later the project was given a “green light”, while the development of the novelty was entrusted to a partner, Ford (the Americans presented their related Amaroku pickup truck, the third-generation Ranger, in November 2021 ).

At the same time, the Ford Ranger has a «related» SUV — Everest, while Volkswagen does not have a similar model in the lineup.

Moreover, immediately after the presentation of the “second” Amarok, the Germans claimed that they did not plan to create an SUV based on the new truck.

Now the British Autocar reports that the corresponding model may still appear, moreover, in the “green” ID line.

The publication refers to Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles CEO Carsten Intra, who said that the company continues to develop an electric version of the VW Amarok chassis for the future SUV.

According to him, the project, which is still on the agenda, is being implemented jointly with Ford.

According to rumors, such a platform upgraded for an electric SUV will be called the T6.

SUV Volkswagen can perform in accordance with the ID concept. Ruggdzz (the name is based on the word «rugged», which translates from English as «strong», «reliable»): it was created several years ago, but has not been shown to the general public before.

It is possible that the models will leave the name of the harbinger (although in the end it may turn out to be another digital index).

Earlier it was reported that at the heart of the conceptual SUV ID. Ruggdzz is the MEB platform developed by Volkswagen.

Ralph Brandstetter, then CEO of VW (now head of Volkswagen China), noted that the production model, based on the ID. Ruggdzz is set to compete with potential electric versions of the Ford Bronco, Jeep Wrangler and Toyota 4Runner.

On the plans to release that version of the Volkswagen ID. Ruggdzz in 2023, the cross was put back in 2020.

Now the project seems to have gone in a different direction.

So far, it is known that the Australian division of Ford (located in Melbourne) is engaged in the modernization of the platform of the current Amarok.

It is assumed that in the future, the Ford headquarters in Dearborn (USA) will join the development.

It is expected that the new frame Volkswagen SUV will receive an interior that will borrow a lot from the “second” Amarok, and the interior will be designed for seven riders.

According to preliminary data, the model will be equipped with a traction battery with a capacity of at least 110 kWh. There is no other, even indicative information about the «stuffing» yet.

At the moment, it is unclear whether the project to create an electric SUV based on the VW Amarok will be connected with the revival of the Scout brand in the United States, under which green pickups and SUVs are planned to be produced in the second half of this decade.

Earlier it was reported that the Taiwanese company Foxconn can provide a platform for them.
