Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX: exemplary aerodynamics and more than 1000 km on a single charge.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a string of automotive premieres at the CES 2022 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

The Vision EQXX concept electric sedan is being touted as the most efficient model in the history of the German brand. The production version is expected in 2024.

The Mercedes brand teased us with teasers of the Vision EQXX for more than a year, underlining the importance of the concept for the company.

Meanwhile, at the level of ideas, it turns out that there is nothing new in it — it’s just a compilation of already well-known techniques and materials, but the compilation is good, thoroughly worked out.

The German press has at once dubbed Vision EQXX the electric analogue of a highly effective diesel coupe Volkswagen XL1 ten years ago, but it seems to us that it is more correct and appropriate to compare the Mercedes-Benz concept with the Dutch electric liftback Lightyear One, which will start production in the middle of this year at the plant Valmet in Finland — a similar elongated shape and a large solar panel on the roof, but only with Lightyear One she gives up to 70 km «free» mileage per day, and the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX — to 25 km.

In other words, the Dutch have used solar energy and the usable area of the car more effectively.

But the Vision EQXX has better aerodynamics: the claimed coefficient of scrambling is 0.17, compared with 0.20 for the Lightyear One. Moreover, Mercedes-Benz managed to keep normal mirrors, and not to replace them with inconvenient cameras.

The car is beautiful or not, let everyone decides for himself, but the absence of branded Mercedes-Benz features in the Vision EQXX has already managed to note many — in front of it and it would have been taken for a new Volkswagen family ID, if not for the emblem with a three-beam star.

The front end of the Vision EQXX is equipped with movable flaps that direct air to the battery cooling system when necessary, and the rear end has a developed diffuser with a retractable section, due to which the overall length of the car increases when driving at high speed.

Overall length in static mode is 4630 mm, wheelbase is 2800 mm, rear wheels track is 50 mm less than front ones.

It turns out that the Vision EQXX in dimensions is a little less than modern C-class, that is, it does not pretend to the role of a flagship model.

Tires with ultralow rolling resistance are designed by Bridgestone, they are installed on 20-inch lightweight forged wheels of magnesium alloy with translucent hubcaps.

Brake discs are made of aluminum to reduce weight. Curb weight of the car is 1,750 kg, 495 kg of which go to the battery together with its composite body and power electronics unit.

Projects like the Vision EQXX are not about sporty dynamics and power, although the development of the concept is said to have used Formula 1 technology.

An electric sedan is propelled by a single electric motor of 150 kW (204 hp) on the rear axle, acceleration up to a «hundred» and maximum speed is not specified, but it is said that efficiency of the power unit is as much as 95 %.

But the main feature in this case is range on a single charge, which is more than 1000 km. The 920-volt battery with a capacity of just under 100 kWh with CATL cells with a silicon anode is 50% smaller and 30% lighter than the battery of the production flagship Mercedes-Benz EQS liftback (107.8 kWh).

The design of the Vision EQXX makes extensive use of composite materials with the addition of biofibers, 3D printing and bionic structures (such as openwork shock absorber mounting cups), but the body is steel, designed with a view to mass production.

In the cabin — four individual seats, divided by a high center tunnel, and completely faceless front panel with 47.5-inch seamless screen with a resolution of 7680×660 pixels.

In the trim — only natural materials derived primarily from renewable biomaterials and recycled materials: cactus, bamboo, mushrooms, plastic bottles, cardboard, food waste and even used baby diapers — yes, yes, now all this is called a premium trim.

Another interesting «feature» is the energy-efficient audio system: compact loudspeakers are built into the seats, to be close to the ears of the occupants and not require high power.

The official press release doesn’t say when the Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX will become a production model, but British Autocar magazine quoted design chief Gordon Wagener as saying it will happen in 2024 and that the production sedan will look a lot like the concept.

The commercial name is still classified — wait for another variation with the letters EQ.
