General Motors Corporation plans to follow the example of competitors to expand the Corvette family towards the SUV segment.

An all-terrain Corvette is expected in 2025 and will have an electric powertrain.

The idea of turning the Corvette into a crossover has been spinning in the heads of GM managers for at least five years, but only now this idea has finally begun to be worked out in earnest, as reported by Bloomberg, citing anonymous sources within the American corporation.

Corvette in general, in terms of evolution, is considered a long-term construction project for GM: it took the corporation half a century to decide to change the layout of a sports car from a front-engine to a mid-engine one, and the actual development of the mid-engine Corvette C8, which debuted in the summer of 2019, took ten years!

Things should go a little faster with the crossover, although Bloomberg’s sources claim that specific work on the project (let’s call it the Corvette-SUV) has not yet begun, and it is still at the stage of approval by management.

But the probability of a positive decision is very high, because the experience of competitors shows that such a spin-off can be very profitable.

Traditional sports cars today have a fairly limited market potential, and sales statistics for the Corvette C8 confirm this: 21,626 copies of this model were sold in the United States last year.

This is 20.2% more than in 2019, but, for example, in 2014, the front-engine Corvette C7 sold 34,839 units.

The new mid-engine Corvette was very well received by the press and fans, but as we can see, this did not help it much.

The experience of competitors, in particular Porsche and Lamborghini, shows that the appearance of a crossover in the line of sports cars gives an explosive growth in sales, and money begins to flow into the pockets of the manufacturer like a river.

Crossovers will soon appear in the Ferrari and Lotus lines. The example of Ford, which turned the Mustang sports car into the Mustang Mach-E electric crossover, is also indicative.

Although its design and characteristics were far from ideal, people are ready to buy this car and Ford is already thinking about new, more powerful modifications.

If everything goes according to plan, the Corvette SUV will be released in 2025 or a little later.

That is, it will probably already be a participant in the second phase of GM’s transition to electric vehicles, and the first, we recall, provides for a market launch by 2025.

30 new electric train models, most of which will be based on the Ultium modular platform.

By the way, let’s clarify: at first GM called the word Ultium only the battery developed jointly with LG Chem for this platform, and now it calls the entire platform that way.

The Ultium platform, in theory, allows you to create a wide variety of electric vehicles on it, but so far we have not seen sports cars based on it.

GM managed to present or announce on this “trolley” the unmanned shuttle Cruise Origin, the Cadillac Lyriq crossover, the Cadillac Celestiq sedan, the GMC Hummer EV pickup truck and the BrightDrop EV600 commercial van.

By 2025, GM will likely have a new generation of solid-state battery in its arsenal, which will provide the Corvette SUV with a range comparable to gasoline cars.

The line of traditional Corvettes will develop in parallel, and its pinnacle, as we previously reported, will be the hybrid version of the Zora with an output of over 1000 hp.
