The brand is positioning the 718 Cayman GT4 as a striking representative of the Boxster Spyder family and a GT3 sports car that was created by Porsche’s semi-autonomous Skunkworks GT division.

It is a legendary company that develops every Porsche with the «GT» prefix.

In Stuttgart parlance, this makes the GT4 and Spyder the most productive and ambitious 718 family members to date.

The GT4 and Spyder variants with the more powerful RS engine are due for release in two to three years.

While the Porsche was still in production, fans accused the brand of the six-speed manual transmission and its lagging speed would be a stumbling block that could affect the performance of the future model’s 3.8-liter engine.

The solution the head of Porsche is talking about is the aforementioned PDK seven-speed dual-clutch, which not only adds an extra gear over the manual transmission, but also whose top gear is slightly shorter than the seventh gear found in the smaller 718 variants with PDK.

At the rear of the car is a Porsche 4.0-liter naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine.

Although its total displacement is close to that of a GT3, the new 718 GTS 4.0 is an enlarged version of the 3.0-liter twin-turbo with downstream turbo that is found in every 911 generation without a GT or a 992 with powerful components like like a new crankshaft and manifolds.

Peak torque is only achieved between 5,000 and 6,800 rpm, and the full 414 horsepower can be felt at a peak of 7,600 rpm.

You have to keep the RPM high most of the time, which made it much easier for the PDK to run smoothly.

The second gear reaches its maximum at just over 100 kilometers per hour, and the third is about 200 kilometers per hour.

Track performance

It accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in just 3.4 seconds, improving both the official Porsche rating (3.7 seconds) and our previous 718 GT4 test with a six-speed manual by a full 0.7 seconds.

The difference between the old GT3 and the new GT4 was further illustrated in the handling tests.

Most surprising is that the GT4 cannot truly beat the 992 Carrera S’s record-breaking torque, as the highest performing Cayman barely breaks the 23.2 second lap record set by the Carrera S, but still treads on the heels of the legendary 992, overcoming the section of the track is only 0.1 seconds slower.

Driving experience

All drive systems have been re-tuned for maximum GT4 performance — a mechanical limited slip differential and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) come as standard for an experience both on and off the track.

The steering is incredibly comfortable and perfectly tuned, the optional carbon-ceramic brakes guarantee amazing stopping power, and the PDK system delivers smooth shifts that seemingly take only a split second.

The speed with which you can overcome even the most winding sections of the path is truly amazing.

Porsche made a splash with the 2019 718 Cayman GT4. 414 h.p. from the 4.0-liter Boxer 6, a decently affordable price and a top speed close to its larger 911 brothers.

However, EVO Magazine has now discovered an even more hardcore version of the GT4 that has been rumored to be the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS.

The biggest difference between the current GT4 and the upcoming GT4 RS, if carried over, is the removal of the low wing in favor of a taller, more GT3 RS-like wing.

Another important detail in these spy photos is the first ever Cayman wheels with central locking. This is further testament to the DNA of the RS car, as almost all RS models had center-locking wheels.

The front splitter is more pronounced and has much larger air intakes for the side radiators, which is typical of the upcoming 992 GT3.

The front bonnet also resembles the Type 991.2 911 GT3 RS with a raised center profile and dual NACA air vents.

The most interesting change, however, is that it looks like there are additional air intakes for the engine where the rear quarter windows would have been on a standard GT4.

Similar to the Ferrari F8 Tributo with its twin-section upper air intakes, this would mean that instead of the regular carpeted shelf in the regular 718, it could be completely split to provide extra air, extra power or extra engine cooling.

While there is no official word on the GT4 RS from Porsche, it’s easy to see that this is indeed a 718 Cayman GT4 with additional details added to it.
