Volkswagen ID.X Performance: the Germans showed a 550-horsepower electric liftback.

Volkswagen has presented a conceptual electric liftback ID.X Performance, which “on paper” seems to be a kind of competitor to the Tesla Model 3 Plaid. It was built on the basis of the production ID.7.

A team of specialists from a design studio in Locarno (Switzerland) worked on the exterior of the car.

Compared to the commercial “seven”, from the outside the car attracts attention with aggressive bumpers and noticeable side “skirts”.

A large sports spoiler is installed on its stern. It is made of carbon.

Plus, the front splitter and rear diffuser are made from the same material.

The four-door also has wheel arches accentuated by glossy black linings.

They feature 20-inch forged rollers wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup track-day tires. The car’s suspension was lowered by 60 mm at once.

The production VW ID.7 uses a twin-engine power plant with 286 hp.

On the presented concept there are already three units — two synchronous engines are installed at the rear and one asynchronous one is installed on the front axle.

In total they produce about 550 forces. Unfortunately, the Germans did not announce the dynamic characteristics of the conceptual liftback.

Presumably, it shoots from 0-100 km/h in less than 4.0 seconds.

Most likely, the car shown is a kind of harbinger of a powerful version of the ID.7, which may appear in the brand’s lineup in the coming years.

In the coming period, Volkswagen is launching a whole line of high-performance electric vehicles.

We recently saw the ID concept. GTI in Munich, and also learned about plans to improve the performance of the ID models. Buzz and ID.3 with the help of the new GTX brand.

But now Volkswagen has decided to focus solely on performance, unveiling a concept model called the ID.X Performance.

Based on the ID.7 sedan, this model differs visually from its regular counterpart only in its basic shape.

The front end has received a decisive update with a large black grille at the base of the bumper and matching air intakes at each corner.

There’s also a carbon fiber diffuser and GTI-like red inserts that frame the entire car.

Sophisticated black plastic covers the wheel arches, which house 20-inch sports wheels with special racing tires.

The rear of the car features a massive rear spoiler on the trunk lid, with a generous carbon fiber diffuser at the base of the bumper.

Red accents on the front and sides also cover the back. The entire vehicle sits at a height reduced by 60 mm compared to the traditional ID.7.

In terms of performance, the ID.X concept is based on the MEB platform that underpins virtually all current Volkswagen electric vehicles, and is powered by two electric motors delivering a combined output of 550 hp. (411 kW).

And like the ID.7, the ID.X Performance concept model features 200 kW DC fast charging capability.

Of course, there’s no confirmation that this concept will go into production, but Volkswagen has already confirmed (and shown on video) an ID.7 GTX model with aggressive accents, improved aerodynamics and, hopefully, more power.

In the meantime, the ID.X Performance concept will be presented at the international ID exhibition. Treffen, which will take place in Locarno, Switzerland, until September 9.
