General Motors’ entry into the midsize electric SUV segment, the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV, has piqued the interest of experts at INSIDEEVs.

The Blazer EV lineup showcases versatility, offering front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive in three trim levels: the base LT, mid-range RS and high-performance 557-horsepower SS.

Thanks to its visually attractive exterior design, the car stands out in the mid-size crossover segment.

The interior impresses with high-quality materials, comfortable seats and user-friendly controls that include physical buttons for various functions.

Despite the Blazer EV’s attractive features, the concern is the price, which is higher than initial estimates.

The LT model with AWD starts at $57,710, while the RS starts at $60,215.

However, GM emphasizes that the Blazer EV is eligible for the full $7,500 tax credit, which could still be available even after the 2024 rule change.

The unconventional launch of the Blazer EV, accompanied by media coverage following its arrival in dealerships, generated significant excitement.

About 1,000 examples are already on dealer lots across the country, helping to propel the vehicle to being named Motor Trend’s SUV of the Year.

The user-friendly design extends to the Blazer EV’s interior, offering a comfortable and well-equipped space. The Camaro-inspired, performance-oriented interior features large circular air vents and screens positioned centrally away from the driver.

A standout feature is the 17.7-inch center infotainment screen and 11-inch front-driver display that are standard on all Blazer EV trims.

These high-quality devices offer exceptional graphics, fast response times, and a host of features that enhance the overall driving experience.

GM is introducing the new Linux-based Ultifi platform, an «end-to-end automotive software platform» that emphasizes over-the-air software updates and inclusion of Google’s Built-In operating system.

While the decision not to include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto has been controversial, GM defends its choice, citing ambitions in mapping, advances in autonomy and charging route planning.

In terms of range and charging, the Blazer EV compares favorably with competitors in its class.

Two battery options, 85 kWh and 102 kWh, provide an EPA-estimated range of 279 miles (AWD) and 324 miles (RWD), respectively.

DC fast charging allows you to quickly increase your range, with the 102 kW battery performing exceptionally well.

Upgrading to Tesla’s NACS connector will provide access to the Supercharger network in the future.

On the road, the Blazer EV faces challenges in delivering an engaging driving experience, primarily due to weight.

At 5,591 pounds in RS RWD form, the Blazer EV is noticeably heavier than its direct competitors, which takes its toll on its performance aspirations. With 288 horsepower, the AWD RS lacks the instant torque found in most EVs.

The RWD RS model is slightly better at 340 hp, delivering improved cornering agility.

However, overall performance falls short of expectations, especially considering the $50,000 to $60,000 price range.

A comparison with the Kia EV6 GT shows that the Blazer EV could face stiff competition in terms of performance at its price point.
