The successor to the Lamborghini Aventador will appear in 2023 in the form of a hybrid with a V12.

Development of the new flagship Lamborghini supercar was delayed, but its concept, fortunately, remained unchanged: the hybrid power plant will be based on atmospheric V12 — completely new, according to CEO of the Italian company Stefan Winkelmann.

The Lamborghini Aventador has been produced since 2011 and has already turned two decades old, but the successor is not ready yet.

In summer, the Italian company presented the final version of the Aventador called LP 780-4 Ultimae in coupe and roadster bodies, which means there will be no new versions and derivatives.

By derivatives in this case we mean projects like the new Countach and hybrid Sian, which are based on the platform, monocoque and 6.5-liter V12 from the Aventador model.

On the Lamborghini Aventador LP 780-4 Ultimae, the 6.5-liter atmospheric V12 mated to a seven-speed single-clutch robot produces a maximum 780 hp and 730 Nm.

Acceleration to 100 km/h takes 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 355 km/h. Only 350 coupes and 250 roadsters will be produced.

Last autumn, Lamborghini chief engineer Maurizio Reggiani outlined the concept of the Aventador successor: then it turned out that the new flagship supercar, whose name is still classified, will remain faithful to the atmospheric V12, but around this engine will be built fundamentally new hybrid power plant, much more complex than the Sian with its 48-volt electric motor and supercapacitor.

The layout of the new model will be close to that of the Ferrari SF90, which means we can expect a high-voltage battery behind the driver and front passenger’s backs and a fully electric front-wheel drive — the inter-axle clutch has been retired, giving the engineers more freedom in terms of layout.

In a tie-in to the interview with Reggiani, we reported that the new supercar would debut in 2021, but that didn’t happen.

New input from Stefan Winkelmann, Lamborghini CEO quoted by German magazine auto motor und sport, indicates that the Aventador’s successor will hit the market in 2023, with many media outlets publishing spy photos of a camouflaged prototype of the car earlier this month, and videos can be seen on YouTube channel Varryx.

It’s impossible to judge the design from the camouflaged prototype, and you can tell from the shape of the front pillars that the mule is based on the outgoing Aventador.

The new technical stuffing is given by much higher located exhaust pipes. Meanwhile, according to Winkelmann, there will be nothing from the Aventador and hybrid Sian in the new supercar, that is, even the V12 engine will be different, originally customized to work as a hybrid, but the top manager has not given any figures yet.

We are still convinced that the new flagship will have a cumulative power of at least 1000 hp.

Winkelmann reports that the new supercar will be quite light, which means that we should not count on a large battery and a large range on a single charge.

For reference we will say that Ferrari SF90 is equipped with a battery capacity of only 7.9 kWh and can travel on a single charge only 25 km.

Nevertheless, the electric superstructure will prove to be quite effective in terms of reducing CO2 emissions in certification tests and contribute to the fight against global warming.
