The successor to the hybrid McLaren P1 won’t get overly powerful.
As the British brand’s engineers said, the full-fledged successor to the iconic McLaren P1 hybrid model will not chase power figures that are inherent in hypercars with an electric motor.
McLaren CEO Michael Leiters has shared more details about the upcoming successor to the McLaren P1, telling western publication Autocar that the electric replacement for the iconic model will be very different from those on the current market.
The carmaker from the British city of Woking does not need heavy and incredibly powerful supercars — this is not what McLaren is doing.
“We want to make a car comparable in weight to the 750S; we don’t need 2000 hp it just has to surpass the level of our ICE supercars,” said the CEO.
When Leiters talks about outperforming the company’s internal combustion engine offerings, he’s not referring to outright speed—a few electric supercars deliver such thrills.
Instead, McLaren wants future electric vehicles to have exemplary performance.
Although he did not give an exact date, McLaren’s CEO suggested that an electric replacement for the P1 would be ready «perhaps at the end of the decade.»
It looks like the automaker’s first electric car will be an Ultimate car, and the technology used in the upcoming model will then be transferred to Super and GT cars. “In general, I think the best way to introduce new technology is top-down.”
While McLaren is looking into electric vehicles, the company says there is no customer demand for high-performance electric vehicles.
That doesn’t mean the automaker can sit back and focus on ICE vehicles.
“No, but we have to be careful,” Leiters replied when asked if customers have asked about electric vehicles.
