Porsche may present the most powerful 718 Boxster Spyder RS.

There are rumors in the Internet that the German brand may decide to create the most powerful Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder RS, which may well become not less powerful than the Cayman GT4 RS.

With the release of the Cayman GT4 RS, Porsche has finally put a 911 GT3 engine on its «baby» sports car.

Will something similar be applied to the Boxster? The answer should be certain — maybe.

Western publications talked to the company’s official spokesperson in charge of the GT series cars.

Andreas Preuninger said that it is technically possible, but the decision has not yet been made: «I could portray something like that.
I think it’s doable, feasible and interesting, but it’s not confirmed.

His thoughts were echoed by the vice president for the 718 and 911 families. Also speaking to reporters, Frank-Steffen Walliser said: «Technically it’s possible. If we do it, I don’t know.

He went on to mention that if the 718 Boxster Spyder RS gets the green light, it won’t be race track-oriented because it has a folding roof.

He called it a «wonderful expansion» of the RS lineup and that he «would love» to see it happen.

To that end, the Mission R concept previously shown was a «preview» of the all-electric 718, but that doesn’t mean the internal combustion engine will be scrapped overnight.

Mr. Walliser said they «still have ideas, we don’t run out of ideas [for high-performance versions of the current Boxster and Cayman lineup].»

The Cayman and Boxster will switch to exclusively electric engines sooner than the same 911, as the more iconic sports car will keep its internal combustion engine for at least another decade.

Walliser said that excessive weight remains the «enemy» of electrification, and only after these problems are eliminated could an all-electric 911 one day emerge.

Meanwhile, Porsche is leaving options open, working on synthetic fuels to save the internal combustion engine.
