The Bavarians introduced the armored sedans BMW 760i Protection and i7 Protection.

In the family of the new BMW 7-Series G70, an armored Protection modification has appeared. It’s available for both the 760i petrol sedan and the electric i7.

By the way, specifically i7 Protection became the world’s first mass-produced bulletproof electric car.

It will be available exclusively in Europe, while a conventional armored sedan will become a global model.

Outside, the «sevens» are not much different from the standard ones, although they can be equipped with special signals and flagpoles from the factory.

But without the latter, bulletproof cars can only be recognized by the more massive frames of thick glass, as well as the presence of high-profile Michelin PAX tires.

The latter have special plastic inserts and remain functional even with serious damage (for example, during breakdowns), although you still have to slow down and drive at no more than 80 km / h.

Interestingly, the body of the armored vehicles is completely new. It was developed in parallel with the bodywork of the base model.

Beneath its outer panels is a power structure called the «BMW Protection Core».

The Bavarians made this «armored capsule» from a special steel alloy by hot stamping. Plus, the cars received a bottom and roof protected from grenades.

Heavy bulletproof doors for cars were also made separately, and the rear sections of the windows were blanked off.

For the first time, they received a servo drive, which not only opens / slams the doors on its own, but also helps with manual handling.

For security reasons, the Bavarians do not share details about the armor, but its class for the new «sevens» will be lower than that of a competitor in the face of the current Mercedes S680 Guard.

The latter has a protection class of VR10 (according to the VPAM standard), which is the maximum for civilian cars.

But in Bavarian sedans, only windows correspond to this level, while the body is already of the VR9 class.

This means that the vehicles are capable of withstanding armored bullets of 7.62×51 mm caliber.

At the same time, for an additional fee, BMW is ready to make partial body protection of the VR10 level for the “sevens”, which will allow cars to withstand armor-piercing incendiary bullets fired from a Russian SVD rifle with a 7.62 × 54 mm caliber cartridge.

As for the equipment of the cabin, all the same options are available for the armored versions of the “sevens” as for ordinary cars, except that you can’t order a widescreen folding screen on the ceiling — instead, the usual displays in the backs of the front seats are offered.

At the same time, the developers equipped the sedans with an oxygen cylinder, an intercom for negotiations with the «street» and a fire extinguishing system.

There is also an electrically heated windshield and lower sectors of the side windows in the front doors.

On the technical side, the petrol-powered BMW 760i Protection is powered by a standard 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, although power has been reduced to 530bhp. (- 14). The torque remains the same — 750 Nm.

The armored modification has all-wheel drive, and the eight-speed automatic machine assigned to it is additionally reinforced here.

Due to the increased weight from standstill to hundreds, it accelerates in 6.6 seconds (+2.4 seconds compared to the regular 760i). Maximum speed is limited to 210 km/h.

As for the electric BMW i7 Protection, the Bavarians took the i7 xDrive60 variant as its basis.

This means that the armored electric car has all-wheel drive and two electric motors with a total power of 544 hp. (745 Nm).

At the same time, several reinforced components from the older version of the i7 M70 are involved in the design of the sedan. From 0-100 km/h, it accelerates in just 9.0 seconds, and the maximum speed is only 160 km/h.

The traction battery capacity of the model is 102 kWh, but the Germans do not advertise the power reserve. It is known that the car consumes about 30 kWh per 100 kilometers. In sparing conditions, this should be enough for 340 km of run.

The gasoline modification has a special fuel tank, the inner coating of which is able to “tighten” holes. Whether any protection is required for the battery on an electric car is unknown.

At the same time, both armored cars are equipped with reinforced suspension and brakes. They also have a fully controlled chassis. His Bavarians decided to try it on their bulletproof sedans for the first time.

The release of Protection-versions will be adjusted at the plant in Dingolfing, where the usual four-door 7-series are also assembled.

For the first time, such machines are planned to be shown to the public at the September IAA 2023 exhibition in Munich. Well, the shipment of the first cars to customers will begin in December twenty-third.
