Einride Pod an unmanned truck. The Swedish company Einride has received permission to operate unmanned trucks on public roads.
Swedish unmanned truck company Einride has received approval from the U.S. Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to operate its unmanned electric vehicles (AET) on U.S. public roads.
The brand will launch a pilot program in which its trucks, called Pods, will be driven by remote operators.
Einride said this is the first time an all-drone electric truck has been licensed to operate on U.S. public roads.
The company also said that their customer, General Electric, will be the lead partner for the new pilot project.
It will test and demonstrate the commercialization of unmanned electric trucks.
Einride is a technology company founded in Sweden in 2016 to develop electrified Class 8 commercial trucks and trailers.
Some of them have autonomous driving capabilities. CEO Robert Falk is a former Volvo executive.
Last November, the brand announced its entry into the U.S. market, operating a fleet of 20 Einride Pods in Louisville and Kentucky.
Einride’s Pod is a pure electric truck without a driver.
It has a breakthrough design. Not only does it have no steering wheel, gas pedal, brake pedal, or even a cab, the entire vehicle looks like a frame on wheels.
To remove the driver from the unmanned vehicle, a remote Pod operator will control the vehicle at all times.
Typically, one operator is responsible for 10 trucks at a time.
Monitoring multiple vehicles can significantly improve fleet vehicle cost efficiency, reduce emissions and improve the work environment.
It is reported that Einride’s pilot project on public roads will be launched in the third quarter of this year.
These Pod trucks will also be driven on roads in the U.S. with mixed traffic to test their operating processes in the real world.
