The BMW Alpina XB7 2020 is a very powerful crossover based on the BMW X7.
Although fans have been waiting for a long time for the BMW X7 with the M-package, the Bavarians do not even scratch it. This is probably why the guys from Alpina decided to fill this gap with their vision of the flagship cross, taking the M50i as a basis and tucking it into a global remake. Looking ahead, it is worth saying that the price will not please, even the AMG GLS 63 turned out to be cheaper.

Here it’s probably worth clarifying who Alpina is. Many people mistakenly believe that this is a tuning studio with a brand, like Mercedes AMG, but no. According to Wikipedia, this is a completely independent brand.

What kind of agreement they have with BMW is difficult to say, but this only suggests that the local engineers have a full carte blanche to make changes and criticism of the source. In general, we meet a review of the most expensive German crossover to date — BMW Alpina XB7.


The differences between the XB7 and BMW X7 are most radical in the technical part. Alpina usually focuses on two things: increasing the initial power and bringing to mind the chassis. It is on them that we will focus.

Immediately go through the power unit. Usually, all Alpina “alterations” revolve around the European market. Hence the use of turbodiesels with a strict framework of environmental standards. But the XB7 is a product for the American market, where everything is somewhat simpler plus give the V8 to the local motorists and not a single cylinder less.

The technical bureau understands this very well, therefore, the novelty also received a gasoline V8, a volume of 4.4 liters with two turbochargers and a peak return of 621 hp. at 800 Hm (for comparison, the maximum speed of the X7 received 520 hp).

Naturally, this could not but affect the dynamics. XB7 was half a second faster — 4.2 seconds. up to 100 km / h, against 4.7 at the source. Acceleration to 200 km / h — 14.9 seconds. And this despite the fact that the “tuning” is 87 kg heavier than the original (2655 kg with a driver).

The electronic collar was lowered to 290 km / h, against the 250 X 7th. Fuel consumption, depending on the terrain and the nature of the ride is represented by marks from 9.7 to 16 liters per “hundred”.

Now about the chassis. The transmission is still represented by an 8-band automatic, but in some publications different information is provided, either the version from Alpina received a new box, or they simply cost the reconfiguration of the existing one.

Four-wheel drive is also available on the XB7. Plus, the cross was equipped with an adaptive steering mechanism and new settings for the electronic rear differential, which the source already had.

The drastic changes were made to the exhaust system, which was completely replaced. The brakes received the same fate (now there is a system from Brembo with 4-piston calipers). And as an option, the manufacturer provides brake discs with perforation and heat-resistant calipers.

As for the suspension, the electronic control of the shock absorbers (they are new) and the pneumatics were completely reconfigured and programmed to subside as the speed increases (at a speed of 250 km / h, the clearance decreases by 40 mm from the original value).

Plus, the BMW Alpina XB7 was equipped with additional stabilizers and, in addition, a few body spacers were added.

There are not many external changes. No reduction in the wheelbase and alteration of 80% of the body elements, as the guys from AMG did this year, was made here. Spent cosmetic moments.

In particular, the exhaust pipes received round double linings on each side, the body kit in the front and rear got additional overlays, the logo changed (Alpina has his own) and the maximum diameter of the rims was increased to 23 inches. The new design, of course, is in place.


Like the source, the salon will be offered in 5 and 7-seater versions. No changes in the architecture of the torpedo or the profile of the seats were announced.

The only thing is that more premium “grades” of leather are used as decoration, and the virtual dashboard is presented in new colors, but with the same interface.

Given the significantly increased price for a crossover, the novelty migrated to the elite class, standing on a par with the Maserati Levante Trofeo, Lamborghini Urus and Bentley Bentayga.

But in fairness, the gap between the XB7 and the Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 is not that big (5 thousand euros), so Ingolstadt is also in a competitive game.

Price and sales start date

The car has already been launched to the market. All cars are presented only in the USA. Interestingly, not a single model that is taken for Alpina alteration is produced with a circulation of over 700 units.

The cost (without surcharge for the brakes) is about 13 million rubles (depending on the course). For comparison, the source code will cost 9.7 million with the possibility of buying in Europe.
